Play the admission cards right

Ekalf

I've just been admitted to a top 10 law school ("X") and I'm obviously very happy for this. However, there are other schools among the top ten which I've also applied to and which I'd rather go to.

Question: do you think it's possible to use my admission decision from X to increase my chances of being admitted to other law schools? My plan is to call the other schools and tell them I've been admitted to X and ask them to "speed up the process". Is that a good idea?

Thanks.

What do you mean by "X" University?

Could you at least tell us which uni has accepted you?

E.G. - If you got into Yale probably you could call CLS....

i too have thought about this and think it's an unwise move. consider the following (with apologies for it sounding like Donald Rumsfeld):

- If you believe X is better, why go to Y in the first place
-If Y is better (and the odds are in favour of Y believing so), nothing good can come of it.
- if it is likely that Y feels X is better but you still prefer Y, and write to them, they may (a) take a favourable decision to retain you; or (b) conclude that you're bluffing and not take a favourable decision for this reason.

Thus - there is a reasonable chance of the whole thing backfiring.

Having said that i am aware of two instances where applicants who were awarded prestigous scholarships (i.e. Hauser, etc.) did receive early decisions but that was without any action on their part.

I will let Y school know that you have been admitted by X school and you have to make a deposit to X schoo by such date. Since Y is your first choice, you tell them that you would like to get a response on your application ASAP. For your information, I am in the same situation and I sent an email to 4 school which I would prefer to attend than X school and the a response that I received from 2 of them was great. They congratulated me on my offer and they advised me that they will speed up my application at their school and I should hear from them by mid-February. How it can backfired on me ? Full disclosure is the key and, moreover, I do not have $$$ to waste in deposit. In my case it is 1,000 pound sterling that I have to send to OXFORD by March 12). I hope it helps you. All the best to you and congratulation on your admission offer.

Same here....
I asked Y for an expedited review but they haven´t said a word yet...
I have been admitted to 4 other universities but I´m not willing to make a choice until Y notifies me their decision...

Dear All,

I have been admitted to X university and Y university is asking that if u have been admitted to any other university , then v vil retire your file. Further, if I want to join Y university but they are saying that they will keep me on the waiting list.

Please help me out. Is it safe to provide Y university the admission card of X university...and to let them know that I am not interested in joining the X university.

Will Y university accept me.

Speeding up the process and improving your chances in the process are two different things - you shouldn't assume that a quicker decision will necessarily yield a more positive result, especially if you suspect the schools in question may have found your application borderline (this actually gives em more reason to reject).

In the scenario above (waitlist) it doesn't hurt to inform where else you have been accepted because this isn't the same as an expedited decision (if I read the post correctly). Asking for an expedited decision from a borderline school may easily backfire, so do it with extreme caution unless you have a deadline for acceptance at the other schools - in which case you probably have more to lose by waiting, depending on what universities they are and how much you want to go there.

To be very honest with you guys, I'm very tired of this LL.M stuff ... These lists and all steps to be taken suck ... If someone is in Sao Paulo, let's drink a beer.
cheers
