Hi There-
I have done B.Com+LLB from India and hold Company Secretary (CS) certification from India. Im currently working as a CS in a private firm with 3+ years of experience.
I would like to ask few questions regarding higher education in US given my background.
1. Is LLM the closest degree that matches my background? Or is there any equivalent degree for a CS in US?
2. If i were to do a LLM in US on F-1, how likely does people get jobs on OPT/CPT?
3. Could you suggest which LLM programs in US specifically are good for international mobility i.e. if i dont get a job in US or i plan to return back to India, I can easily get a job in India with that LLM degree?

No, we really don’t have a regulated company secretary profession here. Your qualifications will not be familiar to most people here in the US. An LLM or MBA is the most relevant qualification for you.
You can probably get a job on OPT, maybe for CPT but the CPT will likely be unpaid and for school credit. You might even get a job after, but the firm would have to sponsor you for immigration which will be a challenge. Not impossible, but difficult. You would also need to take the bar exam to work here in any legal job. That is a long arduous process and you won’t be a sworn member of the bar until about 6 months after passing the exam.
An LLM is a gamble here, especially for the last 10 years. Jobs are harder to come by now. The legal profession is not very mobile and more competitive than ever.

Thanks a lot for your response. Appreciate it.
As you mentioned MBA, would like to know which MBA programs would be most relevant? Are you referring to a general MBA in finance or marketing or some specific MBA programs?
Also, I have heard about degrees such as Master in Legal studies/ Master of Jurisprudence. What do you think of those? Are those significantly different from LLM? Does LLM have better job prospects than these degrees, all else being equal?
Thank you again.

I don’t know anything about MBAs. But the MLS/MJ degree is useless- they’re for anybody and these greedy law schools sell them to people even though they’re totally worthless.
