Hi ALL. Need some advice. I'm gonna attend an LL.M. in NY next fall. I'd like to be accompanied by my fiancèe.
Since we are not married there are thousands of visa problems. In brief, based on the available information, it is extremely difficult to obtain any visa for the partner if one is not legally engaged.
Maybe there are current LLM students who have been in the same situation or prospective students that are facing the same problem. Any suggestion is really welcome.
TKS to all.

Acknow,
Depending the country where you are from, u can be legally bind to your fiancee by a private instrument, without yet being married, but showing the legal relationship beteween you two.
i.e. in Brazil There is a (excuse me for the lousy translation) "Stable Union Agreement" through which two parties state their intention to commit to a lasting relationship - it is a legal and binding document here in Brazil -
However, I dont know how the American Consulate will interpret it and if it exist in your homecountry.

Map, thank you for this. Unfortunately we have not this instrument in our homecountry. Did you manage to have the visa in Brasil also for your "Stable" partner?

In Finland, at least, even unmarried couples find it easy to arrange visas. Today I had a discussion with a former Fulbrighter who told me that his fiancee studied couple of courses at some N.Y. art school (he was at NYU) and obtained a student visa. Are you sure it's that difficult in your home country? Have you asked from American consulate?

You have a real problem but you are asking the wrong questions. Let me explain:
The first thing to wonder is: What will your fiancee do in the US? Will she wait for you simply at home ?
I don't think so, she surely want to have some activities.
Therefore, there are two solutions:
- either she wants to work in the US: she needs a working visa, (which is hard to obtain)
- or, like you, she wants and she can study in the US (arts, english, etc..). In that case, that can allow her a student visa.
That's why, for me, the best thing to do (I'm in the same case as you, and that what we will do with my fiancee), is that she registers to an english school in NY, then obtain a student visa, and moreover, she will learn english and meet other people
