Hi everybody,
I just discovered this wonderful forum and I have a simple question.
I am currently enrolled in a LLM program in USA / Michigan, having a JD diploma and 3 years practice experience earned in a East European country - family law, taxation/contracts and immigration.
What states reject BAR examinations for an LLM graduate in USA ? I am getting nervous just thinking that I might spent 2 years of study for nothing :(
I am a green card holder and future US citizen in 2 years from now.
Or let me be more polite and not waste your time: where can I find more information about the states which allow LLM graduate to apply for BAR examination ?
Any info or link will be greatly appreciated !
You will probably give me back the pace to sleep well during the night.
Thank you in advance for your help !

California and New York definitely. For California, the website is www.calbar.org. I do not know the NY website. Good luck.

Hi Lexus

What do you mean you have a JD diploma? If you have a JD degree, you can take the bar in most any state.

If you just have an LLM, this differs by state. California doesn't automatically allow foreign students with a LLM to take the bar exam, but if you have an American LLM (it sounds like you will) then most likely they will allow you to. You have to submit a description of all of your legal education and then they decide if its equivilant. I have never heard of a American LLM grad being denied to take the CA bar, but I have heard of foreign students with a LLM from another country being denied to take the CA bar.
