How did you decide which area of LLM to pursue?

Katrina

I'm a first year law student and did my undergraduate degree in Criminimal law in Canada. I plan to pursue an LLM degree in the USA but wanted to know how you decided what area of LLM to study??? I'm doing a two year LLB program (skipping the first year of law school) so I won't be able to take any electives to see what type of law I would enjoy working with. How do people decide?

Hi

I think you should base your choice of LLM on your career plan: for example, what do you want to do or to be in the next ten years? financial lawyer, tax lawyer etc?. This would give you a clue about the area you should focus on. After that, you should try to find out your strenght and weakness on that area or in general to assess your success in that LLM. In this way, you will know yourself and know your goal and finally you will get your choice of LLM.

Good luck

If you dont know what kind of LLM you want to get then you probably shouldnt be seeking an LLM. These programs are not cheap and it would be a horrible waste of money to get into a program only to find that you hate it. Get a job get experience and see what you like. Dont deny someone who actually knows what they want to do a space in a program.
