Any news from Duke???

gabi

I received a rather bizarre response from Duke. They haven't admitted nor rejected nor waitlisted me. They simply say they can't offer me a place now and they ask if I'm still interested in the program or if I have accepted any other offers. Put aside the fact that Duke was one of my last options and that I did receive offers from many others schools (CLS, UPenn, Chicago, GULC, LLM/K) I feel sorry that a school like Duke have this posture. They have no right for such inquiry. They expect applicants to be serious but they're not...

Gabi.. that is really strange :S don't no what that means exactly neither..

Lolita, you seem like a strong applicant! It seems that your TOEFL grade is the only thing holding you back.. Last year I heard in person from CLS dean that it is difficult -but not impossible- to have exceptions on the 105 TOEFL requierment, but that if one has less than 100 it is not worth trying. I am not saying I back up that strict position, I just share what I heard from CLS Dean.

I have no background about Duke on this matter, but it does requiere 100.. so 97 is indeed closer..

Hi, Gabi. Don't be angry.
I think what Duke did is understandable. By asking whether the applicants are still interested in the program, a school my narrow its waitlist, and the waitlisted will have a bigger chance and a clearer expection.
Congratulations on your admissions to other great schools!

I have accepted the offer and am really happy to take part of the LLM degree in Duke Law. Anyone else planning to go to Duke?

Yes, I just got email this morning that I am in. I am truely delighted and surprised to get an offer as I thought being 22yrs old is way too young to be admitted into grad school in the US.... I submitted my application with nil expectation but just to try my chances...

It should be noted that just two weeks prior to today's acceptance email, I received another email from the asst dean asking whether I was still interested in the school and wished to be put in the waiting list. After this email, I lost all hope as I always saw waiting lists are excuses to keep ppl hanging.... soo for those who did receive the same email - dont lose hope cuz it seems that they do it as a trick (maybe) to see how students respond (no comments on how fair this is)...

For those of you who wanted credentials:
First degree: UK LLB (Durham University), obtained a good 2:1

Education experience: HK, Canada (highschool), and UK (uni)

Working experience: presently working in a criminal and civil litigation firm in HK as paralegal, previously interned and now continual volunteer for human rights NGO (giving pro bono advice to asyslum seekers) in HK.

For those of you still waiting, wishing you the best of luck :)
