SOAS/Warwick/Manchester

iron man

Hey guys...i am confused right now and need your help. Ive got unconditional offers from SOAS (General LLM), Warwick (Int Commercial law) and Manchster (Corporate). Ive heard from different sources that SOAS (UOL) is very well known for LAW, rather than Warwick and Manchester. I need your help as i've to decide in a day or two. I dont want to work in UK and would return to India, after my LLM.

All three are great schools!

Just think about the costs of living in London as opposed to living in Manchester or Warwick.

If money is not an issue then try SOAS. It is a very good law school, small university, but very reputable. Plus its a University of London college.

The other two will also give you a top education. Location wise, Manchester is a good place to live, albeit the weather, and London is a great city to study but expensive. SOAS is in a great area of town.!

Good luck!

Out of the three, I'd choose Warwick.

All three are great, and arguably on par with each other as law schools. SOAS does have a good international profile (especially in Asia), but the LLM is quite small compared to other London colleges, and if you intend to return to India to practice commercial/corporate law, it might not be worth it. As a plus, SOAS has the best/most central campus area of all the London colleges.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Manchester and I've read/heard quite a lot of negative comments about the LLB and LLM programmes. The university itself is also a little miserable - it's often glum and rainy. But that said, it's very high in world rankings.

I recently visited Warwick, and thought the campus was briliant (but unlike SOAS and Manchester is is not in a city, but next to one). Overall, I'd pick Warwick (good faculty, high-profile name, and will probably be cheaper!).

Thanks a billion Kerfuffle for your valueable comments. I really appreciate your prompt reply.....as a matter of fact, i'm also willing to choose between Warwick and SOAS. But I'm kind of, more interested in General LLM modules (for its wide course options) rather than Warwick's Commercial Law programme. Since SOAS gives UOL Degree, dont you think that an LLM from UOL weighs more than, an LLM from Warwick??? I'm already working in a top corporate law firm here in India. So an LLM in commercial law would'nt be a plus factor for me. I'd rather be comfortable in taking one module from corporate, one from Human Rights, one from Environmental Law etc. So, whats your valueable piece of advice in this regard!!

In that case go for SOAS.

It's a very respectable law school. You can't go wrong with it.

I am actually surprised that it ranks high as it is such a small specialised school! I am also tending to go there for its Environmental and natural resources courses. Dr. Phillipe Cullet is someone I would really like to work with!

If you want a general overview take SOAS. Warwick will specialise you in a an area that you already have knowledge and SOAS will give the extra knowledge that you are looking for! Might be bit more expensive but well worth it!!!

Hey wheretogo....thanks a lot buddy. Seems you'r right. I also want to get UOL Degree....since UCL and LSE have started giving their own Degree's, i'm of the view that SOAS would be the best option. Let's wait what KERFUFFLE thinks about it.

I agree with Wheretogo, SOAS is probably the best choice - especially as you're interested in a general LLM, and not a particular speciality. The downside is it will cost more than Warwick for accommodation etc., but the main advantage is being able to capitalise on all the events and legal seminars/conferences in London.

Good luck!

Hi Iron Man. I think in terms of reputation within the UK all three universities are fairly equal so Id say you need to decide based on what it is that you want to study and which city you fancy the most. On your study programme, Id choose SOAS cause youd have the chance of doing a general LLM that would allow you to broaden your choices and maybe try studying something different (instead of pure commercial law). In terms of city, however, you need consider that life in London can be rather expensive and not everybody likes the big city thing on the other hand, I heard a friend of mine (who went to Warwick for his LLM) once saying that Coventry is kindda boring so maybe Manchester would also be a nice choice in terms of place to live Nonetheless, after almost one year partaking in the discussion on this forum Ive realised one thing the University of London is apart from Oxbridge the best place in terms of reputation for postgraduate study, especially for overseas students Ive spoken to some people and they all tell me the same thing University of London is held in high regard all over the world. Of course some colleges enjoy of greater reputation such as LSE, KCL or UCL but you cant go wrong also with Queen Mary and SOAS

Well juvraj....
My vote is for SOAS. Bristol is no doubt a great uni as well, but it does,nt go with the UOL Colleges. You'r Lucky that despite being rejected from QMUL, you got an offer from SOAS. For reputation point of view....you can refer to BEICON'S comment, as it was rightly pointed out by him. You can 'PM' me as well, so that we can have a detail'd discussion. All the best buddy.
