I got a conditional offer in march, but haven`t heard anything from the colleges yet.
Oxford Colleges 2007-2008

First choice colleges apparently had a deadline of 23rd April to accept or reject and then notify the Graduate Admissions Office - if you have heard nothing, then it is safe to assume that your file has been passed on to your 2nd choice or one of the other colleges that has yet to fill all it's places.
The process will probably take another few weeks!

Somewhat unrelated, but still related to Oxford -- I've noticed that a lot of UK practitioners have both a BCL and an LLM. Do you think there's any reason for this?

Hi - I'm also yet to hear from a college. I presume I've missed out on my first choice but I'm not sure what's happening. I read the guidance notes to the application and it says if you don't get into your first choice your application goes back to the faculty. The faculty told me that 'a college' is considering my application but it couldn't tell me which one! Am getting slightly freaked out. I'm wondering if all the good colleges get filled up with first choice people leaving only the 'not so great ones'. Anyone with any positive thoughts :)

Hi IPCT, I only received a letter from Balliol this week. I guess it just takes a long time. So I would not even give up on the first choice college yet. Also, people generally tell me that for graduate students it does not matter that much which college you are affiliated with. So don't worry too much if the first choice would not work out. Hope these are positive thoughts.. Good luck!

Thanks, that is positive!

Hi, I'm yet to hear from any college! It's driving me crazy. Does anyone know how to go about getting a definitive answer from the university/colleges? I've tried emailing my first choice college but to no avail. The university says to ask the law faculty and the faculty says to ask the college!

ipct i think you shouldnt worry till the end of May, i talked 1 week ago with some lady from admission office (i was refused by me first choice and was curious where my application was sent to) and she said that end of May is deadline for college response. so i guess you have to wait two weeks more..

HomerJ and Anna: Exeter wasn't my first or second choice either, but I'm told it has an extremely active and friendly MCR.
IPCT: You could try emailing your second choice college. They should at least be able to tell you if they have your dossier.
Hope to see all of you in October!

I've just found out my application is being considered by St Catz, which was not my first or second choice college. Does anyone have any tips about how the best way to get into a college you're happy with when you apply? I am deferring so may just re-apply next year instead and I want to make sure I put good first and second choices so that I don't get sent out into the 'pool' again.

Some colleges only take a very limited number of graduate students and still others may take even fewer law graduate law students. The larger the college, in my opinion, the better the social scene, grounds, and usually the better the college bar. Whether a college accepts you or not most likely has nothing to do with your credentials (if the law faculty accepted you, a college surely will as well), but admission to the college may depend on factors such as whether certain tutors are available next year, what the tutors would like to teach, and other such intra-college matters. And you have to remember that they're all great colleges, they're all part of Oxford!

Well, I got an offer from Hertford, my first-choice college. It's not one of the really famous colleges (which is part of why I applied there - easier to get in!) but has a balance of great location, quality accommodation, rich history and academic success, without any of the formality / snobbery that puts a lot of people off Oxford. I'm looking forward to it loads now - affordability is the only issue!

Hertford not famous!? Have you not read/seen Brideshead Revisted? You must see it before you start at Hertford!
Posted May 17, 2007 21:49
Oh, of course Hertford has some renown - everyone knows the Bridge of Sighs, for example, even if they don't know which college it belongs to! It's just all this talk of places like Christ Church and Balliol that puts it all in perspective ;-)

I found out about something called the Norrington Tables which ranks the colleges on their undergraduate performance and i also heard that the quality of the college i.e. the success rate of its students largely appears to correlate to the quantity of money it gets. Noting of course that undergraduate and graduate criteria must inevitably be different it one can't totally dismiss the Tables. In fact i dont think i have heard them mentioned in this thread.
In any event, i was accepted to St. Catz, of course i would liked to have got into the balliol, merton, magdelen, christ or chorpus but thats just for namesake i intend on studying hard and st. catz makes that convenvient by being very close to the law faculty and bodelian. I am a lazy bugger so yepee for me.
Like alot of us its simply the money now that is of concern. I hear that kidneys are doing well on the chinese black market but does anyone know where to find the black market? i dont suppose its easily found at night?
By the way if anyone knows anything about St.Catz do tell or anything about the BCL for that matter from personal experience i mean
cheers.
