Hi, I got an admission for LLM pre-sessional course 2011. Is there anybody took this course before? How was it? What's the pass rate and what should I do to pass it. Thanks.

Hi, I was there last year. Assuming 6 weeks' course, I will tell you briefly.
Course contains 5,6 modules; writing, grammar, listening and note-taking, speaking, and self-studying. Maybe an pre-lecture of your major will be held per week.
During the course, you will submit two essays; one is essay question and the other is problem-solving question. In addition, three presentation will be held. Apart from them, listening test and writing test will be given.
The requirement for the pass was 70% of the course score. If failed, just join the incessional course during the main term period. it takes about 5,6 weeks.
Pre-sessional course itself was pretty tough because from 9:00am to 5:00(sometimes 6:00)p.m you have to endorse the schedule. The quality I thought was recommandable and this will give you more opportunities to prepare for the lecture. The more you join, the more you gain.
Cheers!

Thank you very much, Lynn!
Yes, I am going to take the 6 weeks' course with a conditional offer. I was so worried about the course because I supposingly have to pass it to get an unconditional offer and another CAS which cover the main course. So if failed, can I also get an unconditional offer by joining the insessional course?
By the way, I am now preparing for the pre-sessional such as watching online courses posted by Oxford, Cambridge and listening to BBC radio (not much interactive, so I don't know whether it's useful or not). Would you like to share any other good ideas or methods to prepare for it? Thanks a lot!
Seems you're still in Soton, wish you all the best with your study!!

Wing,
In-sessional course is subject to the failure of pre-sessional course. Therefore, if you can achieve unconditional offer, it is not necessary to join both courses. Aside from these courses, you are able to participate in another language courses for foreign students during the main course at the voluntary basis.
The level of the course is, to my mind, not very hard. If you can follow the schedule, you are likely to pass the course. In preparation for it, I think you are going well. Nothing special. Just read, write and listen as you usually do. That's it.
Good luck!

Thanks Lynn, relax a lot.
"passing the pre-sessional course" is the condition for my offer, if I don't successfully complete the course I will not progress to the LLM programme. So only passing it can get me an unconditional offer.
I'm wondering is there anyone in your class with the same condition who failed the pre-sessional course but also exchanged an unconditional offer by taking the in-sessional course.
Thanks again for your reply!!

Student who could not meet the score for passing the course could get unconditional offer. However, they should take part in in-sessional course during the course if the score is not so bad.
At that time, I heard that if the score was seriously bad, the unconditional offer could not issued, but as far as I was concerned. all students in my class received unconditional offer whether or not they passed the course and some of them joined in-sessional course.
Don't be serious as to the passing the pre-sessional course. You will enjoy it!

Completely released now! I do wish to enjoy the course and not to be bothered by the condition. I'm now much more confident that I will enjoy and crack it. Your reply really help a lot!!
In fact, I majored in Maritime Law when I was an undergraduate. To prepare for the main course, I'm reading "Maritime Law" by Christopher Hill (third edition), do you think that would be helpful? Or any other books or typical cases recommended by teachers? Thanks!!
