Foreign lawyer employment chances in Scotland

Ryker

Hey, so I was wondering if anyone knows how hard it is for a foreign lawyer having done an undergraduate degree in a different country but then went through the LL.M. in Edinburgh or Glasgow (or any other Scottish university) to get a job in Scotland? Is the job market as tough for foreign lawyers as in England and USA?

Hi Ryker, I'm not from Scotland, but I've got a friend there who tells me that it's very hard for a foreign lawyer to get a job in Scotland, especially considering the LLM doesn't give you the right to try enroling as an advocate or solicitor... I'd need to go through the entire LLB. But I'll probably go to Scotland (Aberdeen) next year anyway, in spite of all odds!!!

Hi Ryker,
I agree. I am a US qualified attorney in multiple jurisdictions but that does not matter for a law firm in Scotland. You must qualify under Scottish law. Your best option would be a non-legal, consultancy job but those are few and far between if you have no right to work here. I made a half-hearted attempt when I first arrived to find part-time legal employment while I write my PhD but the only thing available was working as a para-legal...no thanks.
Best of luck.
