I can only quote the British Council - they say it's 8.500 to 10.000 pounds for one year, but including housing. I guess they might calculate about 90 to 100 pounds per week for housing.

but i heard that it is more expensive ... a lot more
and i do not want to get there and discover i will not make it through the year..

I am currently studying in London. The cost of living depends on the place you are staying and the lifestyle you have. You could easily manage with £10000 if you dont plan to party too much and eat out on a daily basis. I have friends who get by with as little as £100 pounds a month (excluding accomodation). But that is if you plan only to eat food cooked by yourself and you are not travelling anywhere. For me it comes to £700 a month including accomodation, some months it has ran up to £1200 (when I had partied really hard). Also if you are leaving outside central London in Zone 2 or 3. the cost of living will be much cheaper.
I would say you would easily get by with £10000 a month. I would budget it like this:
Acco - 360 to 450 pm
Food- 200 pm
travel- £10 (if you live near the university you will not inccur this)
Books, stationary etc..- £ 50 pm
Socials - £100.
This topic has been discussed several times do a search and you will get lots of opinions and ideas on how to budget your stay.

so it all comes down to how often you go out and party ....
personally, i will be livng in zone 1.. and i think i can afford to pay 600 per month excluding housing which 100 per week and i am glad that you think it is enough.
