Hello irish guy!!
I've posted my message several mins ago...I really is in need of info how to apply to different British unis / where to get application forms/ all this important things...
I realise U may not be intersted in helping me but I am asking for help...
i hope to get an answer from U soon!
If u are interested - write me on my mail a_rod_serve@yahoo.com
Thank U

Most British universities ahve information about how to apply on their websites, what the standard requirement/offer is, closing date and what supporting documents you will need (references etc). If you haven't noticed, British univerisities have similar addresses ending in 'ac.uk'. So, for example, www.Sheffield.ac.uk or www.Edinburgh.ac.uk. If you don't have the address and don't want to use a search engine you can then make a good guess as to the correct address. Often there will be a faciltiy which allows you to request prospectus and application form to be sent via mail. Some universities will also allow you to apply online, though you will still have to submit hard copy supporting documents and it is unlikely that your application would be processed until the institution has received these.

Good luck guys.
Irish guy, i have a question for you. My offer doesn't say anything about finacial assistance/scholarships etc.. Does that mean i didnt get any or its still being processed or what? also, no mention of a college yet either. When does that come about?

Cambridge Trust Scholarships are processed after all of the admissions letters have been sent, from what I can remember anyway, so that would be around April/May. Now that you have been admitted bu the faculty, your application will be sent back to the board of graduate studies and will be forwarded to your first choice of college on the form. If you didnt choose a college then I think you are put into some sort of lottery which is normally held, again, after all appications have been received, but I'm speculating on this. It is normally another five or six weeks before you hear back about your college after you have been admitted. I was admitted much later than you however, so it may well be that all college decisions are done at the same time. I'll ask a friend of mine who was admitted in January when he found out about colleges. Congratulations again.

thanks irish guy. hope the scholarships go well. Tuition is pretty steep (though puny compared to US schools). I think for a canadian at cambridge its in the neghbourhood of 40K pounds per year. A lot, to be sure, but hopefully well worth it.

I want to do the thesis option. You had suggested that it's a lot of work. I had better turn my mind to an appropriate topic and contact the prof well in advance, eh?
How did everyone's marks turn out afterchristmas? no disatsters I hope?

No exams at Christmas, unlike the US (and probably Canada as well). Exams are in June. You pick four subjects (three if you are doing the thesis option) and you have the exams for those subjects in June. Nothing until then, no essays, nothing. You also dont have lectures in the final term. It is to be used for "personal reflection". The thesis seems like it is an awful lot of work. The people who did it have been exceptionally busy and are finding it hard to keep to word limits. It also eats up their time in relation to reading for other courses, however with a month of personal reflection before the exams this is easily remedied. And they only have to sit three exams. I forgot that they fleeced people from outside Europe! My college, accomodation and tuitition fees for the year are about 8000. Tuition was 2000 + 3000 for you college (and If I had been smart I could have applied to have the local council pay either this or the tuition, I can't remember which one). Don't you wish you Canada joined the EU! I think they feel guilty about fleecing you though, Americans and Canadians tend to get the best rooms and get to eat at high table for matriculation dinner.

I inadvertantly wrote 40 ooo punds, but that's not correct. it's 20 000 punds which works out to about 40 000 canadain dollars. that's what I meant. But it's still a fleecing, to be sure.
Interesting about the courses.
Do you recall what types of grades people recieved last year? not specifics, of course, but Im thinking generally about whether everyone gets at least a b or bplus if they read, attend class, try hard etc.. I hope that cambridge doesnt throw around c's the way my LLB law school did!!!
By way of contrast, I understand that Harvard, for instance, is quite generous with the bpluses and even the A's.
Also, do you happen to know off hand the thesis word limit?

I think its 20,000 to 25,000 words, and to answer Senator's question, no, it is exceptional for someone to be admitted this early. As was mentioned earlier, people will be admitted in random fits and spurts until around beginning of May from now on. So don't worry.

Lol. As I am sure you can imagine; I am most anxious to hear from them and the fact that quite a few people are getting offers only adds to my anxieties.

Hi Equity's Darling

Since you're from Canada but are intent on studying in the UK, thought I'd ask you this one. The word in Australia is that the North American Unis are far superior than those in the UK for the study of law. Therefore, most professors have recommended I go there rather than the UK. One even said I would get probably get more out of doing my LLM at Toronto than at oxbridge. What's your view on quality of Toronto vis-a-vis the English unis?

well, I think that 'qaulity of a uni' can be defined different ways. There's no debate that the reputation of cambridge or oxford, or for that matter, harvard, yale or columbia (in my view, the big 5) are superior to that of U of T. But, so what? If you are looking for quality of learning and quality of faculty and challenging envrionments etc.. , well, I'm not sure that you'd find the experience at any of the big five markedly different that at U of T. But, if you want to apply to article at a prestigious UK or US firm, well then reputation is important because it distinguishes you from the pack. Likewise, if you want to be an academic, and twenty people compete for one job, well there's no question that if you have Harvard or Cambridge on your CV you go to the top of the interview pile. You might not get the job, of course, but you always get moved up in line. Of course, there's also money. U of T for international studendts will cost about 30 percent as much as cambridge and about 15 percent as much as harvard.
so, lots of considerations...
hope this helps

I have to chip in here since I went to one of the top LLM schools in the US. I actually thought about going to Toronto for my doctorate because although the top law schools in the US have great reputations they don't really deliver on them. For example, there is very little support from faculty as they are too busy developing their prestigious careers to care about a lowly LLM student (although there are exceptions of course). By contrast, I have heard that Toronto is amazingly supportive (esp. David Dyzenhaus) as are the professors at other universities in the Commonwealth. The faculty at lesser known schools are usually more committed to teaching and mentoring because they are not so ego-driven. A huge generalization I know!
But if you want the name on your CV then by all means go to one of the more prestigious schools.
