LLM Help! Student with many questions~

akim325

I have applied for LLM and have got accepted into one of the schoosl I have applied.
I just have several questions which I hope will get answered.

(1) After completing my one-year LLM program, I understand I am eligible to sit for the New York and California Bar exam. If I sit for either bar exams, am I credited to practice law in that state?

(2) After getting an LLM, without a J.D., what are the benefits?

Your answers will be very helpful!

Thank you!

You are if you get enough credits in US law. Being qualified in terms of NY bar is not enough to get a job in US especially if you are a foreigner. If you speak a rare foreign language you might be an asset if a law firm is recruiting new people that are fluent in that particular language required for a particular case... if not, it might be hard to get into a good law office...

I agree. It is also very crucial consider the area of practice and the kind of work environment you'd want to be in. Once you have target practice areas and/or law firms, you may tailor your academic credentials and professional qualifications to raise the chances of getting your desired job.

But, I think you will agree on this one KJP, it is rather hard to get in, even with an LLM degree from universities such as Harvard, Columbia or NYU....

That is true. JDs are still preferred overall. It's a challenge, indeed. But a welcome one. And the success is so much more satisfying.

KJP, I am pretty sure that 7 years of experience in a relevant area will speak volumes to potential employers :) so it will be a tough fight for people who will be in the pit against you :D
