Well in my opinion the situation has changend in the past few years, because more and more people started spoke english quite fluently in Italy. Of course, don't expect to find a cashier at the supermarket that speaks english, like in Germany or Netherlands.. That's won't happen at all!
Neverthless, If you'll need help, it will be a pleasure for me to give you some lessons of italian language!
