How is the LLM in IP and Competition law in Liège in practice?

D.S

Hello!

I recently got accepted to the Masters in competition law and IP law in Liège for the year 2009/2010. According to my own research, this programme seems really interesting. However, I would very much like to hear the personal experiences and opinions of students who have fulfilled this masters programme. How is the contact with the professors? about how many students study this Masters each year? How is the quality and standard of the courses? Are the nationalities of the students homogenic or is there a big variety among them? How is the demand on the working market for students who have fulfilled this masters?

I would actually appreciate any information from someone who has experienced this programme!

Regards,
Dina

Dear D.S.,

I studied there 2 years ago. I can assure you that this LLM is excellent. In fact, Im completely satisfied by the curriculum that I received there. I was still student that I found a job in a law firm in Luxembourg.

To answer to your questions: In my promotion, we were 22 students in class that was great since we were close to the teachers. Teachers are all expert in their own discipline. All of them are practitioners, thats why the lessons were always practical-oriented and I liked this.
In my promotion, students came from everywherethere were a Peruvian, Polish, Slovakian, Hungarian, Italian and Flemishs and Walloons students of course. I keep so much good memories of this year at the University of Liege. You will see the town of Liege is awesome.

Let me give you an advice. enjoy the time you will spend there because after that you will get so much works ;-)

Bye

Hi L.A.IT,

Great that you are considering this Master as well! I haven't yet recieved any closer information about the coming semester so I don't really know the exact starting dates.

However, I have a major dilemma. Recently I found out that I am accepted to a traineeship at the European Commission, DG Competition within the unit I am very interested in. I am not sure what is best to do; to fulfil this traineeship and prospond the master a year, or to take the master??

Would be greatful for some advices!!

Thanks

D.S., my suggestion: do the traineeship at the Commission first. It's really hard to get in and especially to DG COMP, so if u were lucky enough better not to withdraw it. Plus the experience u will get there will only work for your account and it will be definitely easier for u to find a great job after. As to the LLM in Liege u can either start it next academic year or even ask them to allow u to start it in the 2nd semester. I think it should be possible but for all the details u should consult Mme Langevin or Mr Petit.

I personally did this LLM last year and I can definitely advise it to you. The courses are great, so are the teachers who are notable experts in their domain. In my year there were also around 20 people, but this time the majority were from Belgium.

Wish you good luck with your plans!

I just received a letter from ULg last week indicating that there will be a wellcome party on 22 October. But the semester will begin in September (not sure when). This programme seems very attractive to me. But the problem is that most of its lessons are taught in French which is always difficult for me to understand very well. That's why I have not made my decision yet.
D.S. I also think you should take the trainee opportunity first. I had worked with EC competition officials on trade remedy affairs (actually, against them), they are really good.

This is no advertising but my opinion.

Liege's program is demanding, challenging and help you learn a lot of useful skills.

You should ask yourself whether you are willing to accept the challenge.

But Be careful, your vision on competition and IP law is going to change and that could end up in a possibility of an internship in a very good law firm.

The choice is yours.

If you have questions, just ask.
