deep15, I am not sure but to the extent I know the approx time that canada immigration may take will be around 9-12 months and in some cases its less than that also. As far as the jobs are concerned what I understood is that its better to first move to canada and then search for jobs. In that case gettings jobs will be very easy. and for you (as you already has relevant experience as legal assistant) getting a job will be little bit easy. If you try for jobs right from the current place ie., from outside canada getting jobs will be difficult, as generally the employers will not prefer to await for the selected candidates so far, ie., till you get your PR and reach there and join the employer.

Hi, all. I am posting this information for the use of like minded people. my research till date reveals that in Canada (may be almost same in all western & european countries) there is no difference between the working in law firms (practicing law) and working in legal depts of the companies. I understood for both one needs to be licenced to bar as attorney in order to be employed by either law firms or companies as in-house legal in canada. So, it is caution for all foreign trained lawyers, who wish to move over to canada and who wants to work on pure legal side, not to move to canada without obtaining certiifcation of qualification from NCA and without licencing with any provincial bar as attorney. Otherwise you will end up with the positions as legal assistants or para legal positions. (It is is only my personal view as per the information I gathered till date.)

legal India. The timeline mentioned by you is only for highly skilled category immigration. Lawyers do not fall under this category. Normal immigration takes anywhere between 6-8 years nowdays.
Regarding all your posts about NCA and working in Canada a lot of us poor Indian lawyers do not have a job. Employers are not open to hiring foreign lawyers.
Tushal mentioned about a few indians(2 of them). They are the only ones who have been able to obtain a job in law firms. I have been here for 10 months and have one last NCA exam to give and finding a job in the legal field is a nightmare. I have been lucky in finding something linked to legal although not purely legal but sometimes there are options like contract management, compliance etc

Tanushree.tiku,
Thanks for your info. Since some time, I was not active with this thread so I did not notice your post. Initially till the time you settle down well in Canada, its obvious for anybody to be engaged in some or other jobs whether its related to your core area or not. But once you clear your NCA and get yourself licensed as attorney there, I am sure you will get a good break. To the extent I heard, the job market there in legal field in very good, so no need for you to worry. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Wishing you every possible success.

Legal India, I am sorry to break ur bubble but I do not know where you get all the wrong information from. The legal job scene in Canada is really bad. Firms and Companies r not very open to hiring foreign lawyers. majority of the indian lawyers end up startig their own practices which might seem rosy now but its definitely not easy setting up ur own practice here...
By god's grace I have a job but amongst most of my indian lawyers frnds here (atleast 50 of them), I am the only one who was lucky to find a job...

Hi,
I am looking to migrate to Canada. I am Bcom., LLB., holder from India with a overall Corporate in-house legal expereience of over 13 years. Out of this over 6 years I have worked in a law firm and practiced law in high court. The remaining as in house legal manager with the good companies in manufacturing and power sector companies and presently working in one of the EPC companies in Qatar. THis is breifly my profile and I have some questions regarding jobs in Canada:
I would like to work as corporate in-house legal professional in any companies accross Canada for which am I directly eligible to apply to jobs with my present qualification and expreience or would I suppose to do any additional courses (as per recommendations of NAC, Canada) to equal my INdian LLB with Canadian LLB. I beleive this requirement is for those who wants to practice law in Canada. But I don't want to practice law, however my aim is to work as corporate inhouse legal professional. I have extensive experience in Contracts (project as well as commercial contracts) drafting, review & management mostly in Energy & Manufacturing sectors. Can anybody suggest me about the system that existing in Canada?
Any help in this regard is highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Legalindia
Hello,
I work in an In House department for a Multinational Corporation (not in Canada) and many members from my legal department are foreigners, they haven´t done any kind of test to be able to practice law in the country. From my POV, you don´t have to do the exams etc. since your only client should be the corporation. My recommendation for you is to try and reach out to in house counsels in Canada and ask them the question.
Regards,
