LLM career and job prospect

Tanvi123

Hello,
I m LLB student of second year and planning to shift to usa with family. How is the job prospect after LLB and should I get admission directly to LLM after LLB ? Is there any other course which is in very good demand? Please suggest me other option if any which is in good demand because I m not aware of the usa market and job prospects.

I think it will be honest to say that chances of getting a job after completion of LLM are very slim these days (unless you're Brazilian, Colombian etc.)

If you want to work in the USA, it will be tough without a JD. Your best strategy would be to pursue an LLM in tax, but even that may not help.

It's not easy but it's easier. There is a lot of business development work going on in law firms with focus on work in Latin America. I know some people who could get a job, but is still not many! There are few out of hundreds who studied, so it's still negligible. And many made prior arrangements before their arrival.

For LLMs, it's not really about your skills, for what you will do as an international associate, you don't have to be a top notch student with superior grades. More important is what is your experience in your home country, business contacts and potential achievement after your return.

I can't understand, every year there are hundreds of llm students thinking that they will get a job after graduation. Every year law schools stress that llm will most probably not get you a job, but they still think they are smarter, unusual etc. then there is job fair, people get interviews but it doesn't mean anything because firms just come to these fairs to recruit for foreign offices or to look at people, do marketing. Then there is a great disappointment after interviews among those who were hoping to get jobs in New York.

If you want to get a job, it doesn't make a difference, whether you are Harvard or CLS. As long as you are from a T6 law school (HLS, CLS, SLS, YLS, NYU, Chicago), it hardly plays any role. It's very random. From what is see CLS it's most successful in placing LLMs in biglaw, but maybe it's just luck and anyways there are still VERY FEW LLMs.

Even large law firms are firing now, the legal market is about to shrink even further. There are T6 JDs with superior undergrad degrees and tons of debt searching for jobs, willing to work days and nights.

Hi,
I needed to know about the job opportunities in the states after LLM from states. I have done my M.com [business management], LLB from [Mumbai university] India in 2011. I have been practicing on criminal side for past 1 year.
I am planning to pursue my LLM in IPR from the US in 2013.
Also guide me about the job opportunities and prospects apart from working in a law firm after my degree eg {working in companies, IT industries, Non-profit organization etc}
Do, I have to clear the bar exam for it?

Will my M com degree help me in US by any chance for gaining a job.
Is IPR a good option, or does it only favors only people with a science or engineering background.
Should, I OPT for some other subject?
