Competitive LL.M. internships for Summer 2024

Competitive LL.M. internships for Summer 2024

Pursuing a legal internship during the summer can be a game-changer for LL.M. students. These internships provide invaluable real-world experience, networking opportunities and a deeper understanding of the legal landscape.

And they enhance resumes and offer a glimpse into the practical application of legal theories learned in the classroom. With the legal job market becoming increasingly competitive, a summer internship can serve as a critical stepping stone toward securing a full-time position in a law firm or other legal settings.

“During the summer internships students can explore different fields of law to find what aligns with their interests. Having an internship demonstrates their commitment to the legal profession and their willingness to gain some practical experience,” says Silvia Martínez Ruiz, director of talent and careers Talent at IE Law School in Madrid. “Choosing the right summer internship can lead to a full-time job offer.”

Notable legal internships for summer 2024

For summer 2024, several notable legal internships are drawing attention due to their prestigious nature and extensive learning opportunities.

Positions at top law firms like Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP are highly sought after for their rigorous training programs and exposure to high-profile cases.

Government internships with the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights offer unique insights into public service and international law.

Non-profit organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International provide internships focused on advocacy and legal research, ideal for those interested in human rights law.

Corporate legal departments in Fortune 500 companies offer a dynamic environment where interns can learn about in-house counsel roles and corporate governance.

When selecting a summer internship, LL.M. students should consider several factors to ensure they choose the right one for their career goals.

The reputation of the organization, the nature of the work, and the potential for professional growth are crucial elements to evaluate.

Researching the firm’s practice areas and client base ensures alignment with your interests. Also, the geographic location of the internship can impact networking opportunities and potential long-term employment.

“Particular cities or regions in the U.S. or abroad may offer advantages to LL.M. students with certain language skills or knowledge, which can increase the chances of securing a summer legal internship,” says Claire Lee, the associate director of professional development at Boston University School of Law.

“Research the organization thoroughly to evaluate whether it is the right fit, think broadly and keep an open mind to other less traditional legal fields to increase the chances of success,” she adds.

Strategies for securing competitive legal internships

Securing an internship in highly competitive areas requires a strategic approach.

Building a strong resume and cover letter, tailored to each application, is essential. Highlighting relevant coursework, prior legal experience and specific skills that match the internship’s requirements can make a candidate stand out.

Networking plays a vital role; attending career fairs, engaging with alumni and participating in professional associations can open doors to potential opportunities.

Also, seeking faculty recommendations and utilizing law school career services for guidance and support throughout the application process is also beneficial.

“To gain any experience during the summer, students need to apply to posted internships, send cold emails to uncover and potentially learn about unposted internships, and expand their network of legal professionals by attending conferences, networking events and happy hours,” suggests Fahed Alrawaf, a senior career counselor to LL.M. students at the George Washington University Law School.

Resources for finding and applying for legal internships

Various resources are available to help students find and apply for legal internships.

Online platforms like Indeed, LinkedIn and specialized legal job-boards regularly post internship opportunities. Many law schools offer dedicated career services that provide personalized assistance, including resume reviews, mock interviews and job-search strategies.

“At IE University we have developed a careers success program that helps students to maximize their job opportunities. It includes different sessions with market experts, tools to work on their CV and get the most out of their application,” says Martínez Ruiz.

Professional associations such as the American Bar Association (ABA) and the International Bar Association (IBA) often have job boards and career resources tailored to law students and recent graduates.

But turning a legal internship into a full-time job offer involves a proactive and diligent approach. Students should also aim to exceed expectations by demonstrating a strong work ethic, attention to detail and a willingness to take on challenging tasks.

Building relationships with colleagues and supervisors is also crucial, as these connections can lead to recommendations and job offers. Seeking feedback and showing a commitment to professional growth can make a lasting impression.

Additionally, expressing interest in long-term opportunities with the organization during the internship can signal your dedication and fit for the firm.

“A few weeks prior to the end of the internship, be ready to discuss and showcase what value you have already contributed – and articulate how you can continue to contribute in the future,” says Alrawaf.
