The Key Reasons to Pursue an LL.M. Degree

It’s a strategic move for legal professionals, offering a range of benefits, from specialization and global perspective to career advancement and enhanced research and writing skills

Pursuing an LL.M. can be a sound and strategic move for attorneys seeking to distinguish themselves in the legal field. An LL.M degree offers a unique set of advantages that can significantly enhance a legal career, leading to higher pay and career advancement. There are several more specific and key reasons why embarking on an LL.M. program can be a valuable investment for legal professionals.

“There are several reasons why lawyers embark on an LL.M. program,” says Karen Jones, Executive Director of Global and Graduate Programs at the University of Houston Law Center. “Some lawyers want in-depth knowledge in a specific legal concentration area. Others want to gain greater credibility within the legal industry.”

She adds that some employers require an LL.M. for lawyers to have access to certain jobs or receive promotion opportunities, or to change or make a career shift to a different area of legal practice, while foreign lawyers might embark on an LL.M. program in the US to meet eligibility requirements to sit for certain bar examinations. “There are many good reasons to pursue an LL.M. degree,” she adds.

One of the primary ones is the opportunity to specialize in a particular area of law. The legal profession encompasses a wide range of fields, from international law and human rights to corporate law and intellectual property. An LL.M. program allows individuals to deepen their understanding and knowledge in a specific area, making them experts in their chosen field. This specialization can open doors to exciting career opportunities and set individuals apart in a competitive job market.

“Students should remain flexible and target opportunities where they can offer dual-trained advantages (such as business contacts in a different country or familiarity with foreign legal systems) as they decide on a career path,” says Claire Lee, Associate Director of Professional Development for various LL.M. programs at Boston University School of Law.

“Students can also narrow their options through careful self-assessment to identify their strengths, values, and long-term goals so that they can establish a clear direction and move forward in their legal career with their newly obtained LL.M. degree,” Lee says.

A global perspective

In an increasingly interconnected world, legal issues often transcend national borders. Pursuing an LL.M. degree provides an opportunity to gain a global perspective on legal matters. Many LL.M programs have an international focus, exposing students to diverse legal systems, cultural nuances, and transnational legal issues. This global outlook is invaluable for legal professionals dealing with international clients, cross-border transactions, or working in international organizations.

Cardiff University’s School of Law and Politics in Wales, part of the UK, runs a concentration in international affairs within its LL.M. course that explores a host of contemporary global challenges affecting the world today, from refugee law and asylum to money laundering and financial crime.

“Recent geopolitical flashpoints provide us with contemporary case studies from which both the legal and political frameworks can be critically assessed,” says Reece Lewis, the LL.M. Program Director at Cardiff University.

An LL.M degree can also be a catalyst for career advancement. Whether you are aiming for a promotion within your current organization or seeking new opportunities, an LL.M demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

“Many LL.M.s have already thought through their general career path before embarking on their studies, but many have been inspired to revise those plans or to pivot from their prior career goals,” says Julie Anne Alvarez, LL.M. Career Advisor at Fordham Law School, in New York.

Solid employment prospects

Employers often value candidates with advanced degrees, especially in specialized areas of law. The knowledge and skills acquired during an LL.M program can position individuals for leadership roles, allowing them to take on more challenging and rewarding responsibilities in their legal careers.

Furthermore, enrolling in an LL.M program provides a unique platform for networking with fellow legal professionals, professors, and industry experts. The connections made during this period can be instrumental in shaping a career.

Many LL.M programs also offer access to alumni networks, conferences, and events that provide opportunities for networking and building professional relationships. These connections can open doors to mentorship, job opportunities, and collaborations in the legal field.

Lastly, legal research and writing are fundamental skills for any successful legal career. An LL.M. program places a strong emphasis on developing these skills, requiring students to pursue in-depth research and produce high-quality content.

These skills are not only crucial for academic success but are also highly valued in the legal profession. Individuals with strong research and writing abilities are better equipped to excel in legal practice, whether in drafting complex legal documents, arguing cases, or contributing to legal publications.

Overall, an LL.M. can be viewed as a strategic investment in your career, offering a range of benefits, from specialization and global perspective to career advancement and enhanced research and writing skills. An LL.M. degree equips lawyers with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of the legal world and stand out in the crowd.

“Pursing an LL.M degree is an investment,” says Lee at Boston University. “It takes time and focus. Lawyers interested in an LL.M should expect that they will have to sacrifice for it. However, the rewards of an LL.M certainly outweigh the efforts that are put into achieving it.”
