“Our program enables law students and practicing attorneys to dive deeper into cutting edge issues and technologies, such as AI and digital technologies, that are generally not covered in traditional J.D courses,” says Ivy Kagan Bierman, Director of the Entertainment Track within the LL.M. program at University of Miami School of Law.

Indeed, such LL.M. programs prepare students for the dynamic and evolving nature of entertainment and media law, considering the rapid advancements in technology and the digital landscape. They are specifically designed to address the latest trends, technologies, and legal challenges facing the entertainment and media sectors. Topics include digital media law, intellectual property in the digital age, privacy and data protection, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality.

Emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration

Given the interdisciplinary nature of entertainment and media law, many LL.M. programs encourage collaboration across disciplines such as law, business, technology, and the arts. “Entertainment and Media law are now very cross-disciplinary.  Attorneys with a variety of expertise and skills work collaboratively together across departments and offices to service clients,” says Bierman. “And law firms are forming more practice groups, such as artificial intelligence, luxury brands and sports.”

For this reason, the Entertainment Track at Miami Law ensures that students have a cross-disciplinary approach and to better prepare them for their future careers. This helps students to gain a holistic understanding of the legal, business, and creative aspects of the industries they will serve.

What is more, practical experiences play a vital role in these tracks and programs that are focused on entertainment and media law. Internships, externships, or clinical programs provide students with opportunities to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world scenarios. This hands-on experience helps students develop a deeper understanding of how legal principles are applied in practice within the entertainment and media industries.

Hands-On Learning Experiences

At USC Gould, LL.M. students have many opportunities to engage in skills development, through experiential learning courses, volunteer work, and externships with entertainment organizations.

“Given our location in Los Angeles, our students have a unique opportunity to work with leading entertainment organizations as externs. Our students have externed with local talent agencies, entertainment law firms, and the writer’s guild. These experiences build their skillset and network, and allow them to implement what they’re learning in class,” says Sarah Gruzas, Director of Graduate and International Programs at USC Gould School of Law, which offers the Entertainment Law Certificate in the LL.M. program.

Many of these LL.M. programs boast faculty members who are actively engaged in the legal profession and have first-hand experience navigating the complexities of the entertainment and media industries. These industry experts, known as “adjuncts”, bring real-world insights and current industry knowledge into the classroom, ensuring that students receive up-to-date and practical instruction.

“By building and leaning on close relationships with industry, we can offer educational experiences that provide a behind-the-scenes look at the profession,” says Cindy Lin, the Executive Director of the Ziffren Institute for Media, Entertainment, Technology and Sports Law at UCLA School of Law.

UCLA, for instance, ran a recent off-site workshop hosted by a senior attorney at Hulu, where students were able to examine and gain first-hand insights into the specific legal issues faced by a streaming company. This means the school can address current events and issues facing the industry in real-time, in the LL.M. Specialization in Media, Entertainment, Technology, and Sports Law and Policy.

“For example, students enrolled in ‘Video Game Law’ learned about new distribution methods and cloud storage and how they and other factors impact the video game industry,” says Andrea Monos, the Assistant Director of Career Services for LL.M. Programs.

Diverse career opportunities

That can lead a multitude of career opportunities. Graduates may pursue roles as entertainment attorneys, representing clients in negotiations and legal matters across film, television, music and digital media. Alternatively, they could specialize as media lawyers, advising on issues related to print, broadcast, online publishing and advertising. In-house counsel positions are also prevalent within entertainment and media companies, where graduates handle a range of legal affairs from contract negotiation to intellectual property protection.

Intellectual property law offers another avenue, with opportunities to specialize in copyright, trademark and patent law. Additionally, graduates may explore roles in entertainment business, government regulatory bodies, academia, or research, leveraging their specialized legal knowledge to contribute to shaping the future of the entertainment and media landscape.
