The Program

The MBL Energy Law program offers lawyers, engineers, economists and other professionals an excellent opportunity to specialise in the field of Energy Law. Students with a non-legal background will have the opportunity to develop new skills in a legal environment, enabling them to use their prior knowledge and expertise, while students with legal experience will be able to specialise in the area of energy, while also becoming acquainted with the technical and economic foundations of energy law.
The curriculum covers all areas of the value chains in the electricity and gas sectors. Students will examine the European legal framework from upstream generation right down to the supply of energy to households and businesses, including transmission and distribution. The program will assess the salient aspects of EU competition law, regulatory law as well as providing a deep understanding of the technical and economic fundamentals of energy and network regulation. The program will also cover aspects of international law, such as investment and trade law, climate law as well as gaining an understanding of energy regulation in other energy markets such as Norway, Russia, the United States, China, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. European energy law is currently one of the most important and fast-moving areas of law for achieving internationally agreed goals to limit global warming. In Europe, innovative, comprehensive and interdisciplinary legislative packages will create the framework conditions for a sustainable, emissions-neutral economy in the coming years. With the Fit for 55-Package, the European Commission has presented initial proposals for this legal framework. With our lecturers from the European Commission, the private sector and academia, students are always up to date and learn the background, application and impact of the legal regulations first-hand through many practical examples and exercises.
A unique aspect of the MBL Energy Law is the various lecturers who come from around the world to teach in the program. Our lecturers have diverse backgrounds, much like our students, and range from lawyers at law firms in Germany, to regulators at national and European regulatory authorities, to policymakers in the European Commission and professors of energy law at universities. Each lecturer offers their expertise to our students, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of their specialisation in the energy law field, as well as offering practical advice of their experiences in working in the sector.
As well as the many lectures and tutorials at the EUREF Campus, regular excursions are built into our program's schedule. Since we believe a hands-on experience strengthens the learning process and prepares students for their future employment, students will visit different sites such as the largest electricity stock exchange in continental Europe, the EEX in Leipzig, the energy intensive undertaking AURUBIS in Hamburg, the PV manufacturer ALEO Solar in Prenzlau, the Vattenfall’s CHP plant in Berlin or the network operator 50Hertz in Berlin.

Student Life

Berlin:
Our university is located in the heart of Berlin, one of the world’s most famous metropolitan cities. The city is vibrant with scientific activities and research, with more than 200,000 people studying and teaching at Berlin’s Research institutions. Berlin is a cosmopolitan city with people from all over the world contributing to the cultural diversity and vivacity of the city. History is evident everywhere and this too makes the city so interesting. The city has plenty of concert and event halls, plenty of restaurants, cafés and bars in almost every neighbourhood.
Language and sports:
The TU student organization "Language and Culture Exchange" (Sprach-und Kulturbörse) promotes the exchange of cultural and linguistic knowledge in Berlin. This organisation offers cultural events and inexpensive language courses for the students.
TU offers a wide range of individual and team sports. For most classes and groups, online registration is required before attending. As with language courses, classes and groups are starting throughout the year, however, early registration is highly University Life 33 recommended to get you started in time. Needless to say, sports are great to keep you fit and make friends. Students from the EUREF programs meet regularly to play soccer; check out social media. Berlin’s many parks are ideal for cycling and running. The huge former airport Tempelhofer Feld is great (and probably unique in the world) for skateboarding, rollerblading, kite-landboarding, etc. Around Berlin there are many lakes so you can go canoeing, rowing, swimming, or whatever water sports you like; TU Berlin operates a boathouse near Spandau.
