Duke 2014

Hi GG,

I'm also pretty sure I will go to Duke.You should send them an email, they can ask a current student to get in touch with you to answer all of your questions. That's what they did for me, and a French student answered all of my questions!

Hi,
I had an interview with Dean Maher last week. Mostly I was the one asking questions about the university in general, she only asked me one question about my current degree.I would suggest you prepare some questions. Don't worry she is really really nice, she doesn't ask any trick question!
Good luck, I hope it will go well for you too !!

Hello,
I Also had an interview with Dean maher
She asked me two questions: one on "why an LLM" and the other one about my professional perspectives;
It last about 30 minutes and for the last 20minutes I had the chance to ask questions about Duke !
You should prepare those questions to show your interests in Duke but there is no trick questions! And Dean maher is very very Nice! Dont worry and good luck!

Guys it's been a while since this page was last abuzz...Am sure a lot of you may have been admitted in this interim period...Any new acceptances?Anybody here decided on Duke as their final choice?Am waitlisted at UPenn, Michigan and accepted at Virginia but pretty much locked-in on Duke since waitlists can get a bit iffy....

@thecow:Any particular reason for your having let go of Duke and an enticing scholarship?

I know it's a great school but finally I chose Berkeley. The only thing that annoyed with Duke - And I am probably wrong - it is the remote city...I want to take the LLM as also an opportunity to take advantage of a dynamic environment, city. I am afraid Durham will not provide as much opportunities as LA or San Francisco. Don't you think?

@Thecow:Berkeley no doubt a great school....but in the end I guess it all boils down to the choice of subjects...otherwise there's nothing seperating them...I didn't get through the Traditional track LL.M that I'd applied for at Berkeley...They instead made a counter-offer for the LL.M Professional track with a $15000 scholarship thrown in!But yes,according to those in the know Duke is one of the few law schools to offer complete support to their LL.M graduates post the LL.M...Plus they treat LL.M's totally independently to JD's....They've got dedicated placement strategies just for LL.M's...So well it could be either pick...Both have their pluses and minuses....Duke isn't locationally blessed but offers better post graduation support...

I knooow that's why I felt a bit torn up... And I am scared to regret my decision. Everyone say Duke has a great support for LLM after graduation. Anyway I ended up looking at the weather and the sun is shinning more in California :p

Well you won't regret either ways...All the very best to you...The Professional Track just doesn't seem to make any sense...Will overturn my decision only if I get through the waitlist at UPenn...Even then,would be tempted to retain Duke...But do keep in touch.. Would be a pleasure to stay connected...You PM me your details...

@Kimmiraiko:Basically,Duke Law specifically helps LL.M's prepare their C.V.'s when it's job hunting season...Plus they ensure that their LL.M's derive maximum benefit from their robust networks at leading American law firms...They also market their LLM's as best as they can at the annual NYC job fair that comes around every January....The icing on the cake...Duke Law's enviable record at the NY Bar exam...Amongst the ones with the highest pass percentage amongst the top 10....

Well, like you said, UMich and Duke are pretty much equivalent in terms of rankings so it really boils down to a question of feeling. I've always been more drown to the North East and Midwest more than the South of the US and talking to a student who's in Umich right now made me realize that the collegial nature of the university and the city of Ann Arbor were right for me. I honestly don't have any completely rational reason (ie. speciality or academics) to choose UMich, it was more a question of gut feeling and personal choices :).
