Anyone doing the BCL?

Andrea M

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone (BCL students or prospective students) can answer these questions: (as it would be good to have a bit more information)

1.Are the essays that you hand in for the tutorials graded or are they for practice purposes only? From what I have read, it seems that the end of year exams are worth 100%...is this correct?

2. How many essays are there per week? And what is the word length of these?

3. For exams, do you write your name on the exam script or is it blind marking by student number only?

Thanks in anticipation!

Thanks hjscotland. Are you going to do the BCL?

Does anyone know about whether there is blind marking? The examinations section of Ox's website is only available for ox students.

I'm going to do the BCL, yes. I do not know about the blind marking, though.

Exams are 100% (nb that for Jurisprudence the exams are takehome exams). Tutorial essays are usually graded but these grades do not count for anything.

Essay numbers vary dramatically from subject to subject. Some require 8 per year, others none that are compulsory, most around the 4 mark. Word length varies dramatically. 2-3000 is probably a good ballpark.

thank you. I'm really looking forward to the BCL. Edmund, may I ask: at what time after you received your offer did you hear about a college place? One month after, two months? or more?

thanks

Guys, don't stress re college offers. The time it takes can vary dramatically from college to college and depending on whether you get your 1st preference or not.

So, that would mean that for 4 subjects you would have at least 16 essays (and perhaps even more ie 25 -30)???

Or do you mean that the 4 - 8 essays are in total for all subjects?

For some subjects you may not 'have to' write any essays.
For some you may have to write 1-4.
For others you may have to write more than this.
In some subjects some of the essays are optional.

So, yes, it's possibly that, over the course of your entire BCL year, you could write as many as 16 essays. You may have to write more, you'll probably have to write less.

The essays are a key part of the BCL/Ox experience and are an advantage the BCL has over LLM programs.
