I turn 34 years old on Friday (April 17) and have just recently decided that I'd like to pursue law as a career. However, I have to start with my LLB so I have at least 3 years before I'm truly considering which LLM programme most interests me. I'd just like some feedback from anyone about whether pursuing an LLM in say International Comparative Law / Arbitration at 37 years old with a view to beginning a career in this area at approximately 38 years old is just waaay too far past my prime to be worth the while.
Does age matter that much or are good grades and demonstrated proficiency more important?
How old is too old ???

I would never say you're never too old to do anything, and I know lots of people who have switched careers to law in their 30s and 40s. Doing an LLM at 37 certainly wouldn't be unusual as lots of lawyers go back to uni to do LLMs later in their careers - so you won't look out of place.
The sticky point is whether you'd get an entry job at 37, and in my opinion, the major issue here will be where you intend to practice...
For example, the UK is terribly ageist and you won't find many over-30s starting law careers (although, I do know a few people), and you'll often see partners retired in their 50s. That said, many European countries (inc. the UK) have age discrimination laws now, so things may change.
In contrast, I find age to be less of an issue in countries such as the US or Canada where it certainly isn't uncommon for people to be pursuing their JDs/LLBs in their 30s. The whole hang up about age does not seem to be a presiding force when recruiting.
You may also want to consider transferable skills from your previous career - this can provide a unique selling point.

Thanks for the reply .. I'll bear that in mind as far as the best markets to find employment. My current position is that of an Information Technology Manager at a Bank & Trust Company in the Bahamas. I'm also currently bilingual (English-Spanish) and intend to use the next 3 years as I work towards my LLB to also learn French.
The three areas of law that I'm most interested in as far as pursuing an LLM are International Comparative Law and Dispute Resolution, International Business/Trade Law, and Human Rights Law.
Would any of these stand out as better suited for the older entrant ?
