Are good grades enough for llm seats?

TS_lndia

Hey!

I am a last year student of law, my grades have been decent so far and i have been in the top 5 students of my batch throughout. Though i have done various internships under lawyers, judges and firms, but i have not made significant publication or won any big moot.

My llb course is a specialization in Corporate Laws and i want to do my llm in the same. how good are my chances of getting a top tier college? also, what is really sort after in the cv during the selection process.

Thanks!

Your internships will help...

I think that it will depend on the school, and each school will have its own flexibilities.

This is from the current LLM class profile page on Northeastern's website:

Most have substantial experience in and outside the legal field, including experience in engineering, the US Navy, an owner of a toy company, general practice, family law, medical malpractice, health law, human rights (two students have work experience with the United Nations and UNICEF), labor law, and immigrants' rights.

Law schools can be rather vague. Most don't require work experience to apply for their LLM programs, but looking at the class profiles of some, a lot of accepted applicants do have work experience. This is from BU's Banking and Financial Law LLM page:

The typical student in the Graduate Program in Banking and Financial Law has a demonstrated interest in financial services as demonstrated by their academic studies, internships and/or work experience. Many applicants are experienced lawyers who have worked for several years before enrolling in the Graduate Program.

And then in the current class profile at HLS, 72 percent have experience either in practice or teaching...
