Hi,
I live in Belgium (Europe) and have a master degree in law. I'm from chinese origine and speak fluently cantonese. Recently i start learning mandarin.
I work fulltime for the Belgium justice department and i'm thinking to get an LLM in chinese business law @ open university of hongkong (e-learning).
Is there anyone else that studies at OUHK?
What is the general reputation of OUHK, are their e-courses difficult? During my university years i always attended "live" lessons so i have no idea what to expect from e-learning.
I'm planning to continue to work fulltime so i'm a little bit afraid that i'm not gonna manage it all at the same time.
The course cost + 5000 euro. It's quite an amount for me, so i have to calculate my chances of graduating.
I also want to know what the "market value" is of this degree?
I suppose all LLM's add an surplus to my CV?
Thanks in advance for the info.

Thx for ur reply
Is the program that bad? Or is it becoz OUHK doesn't have a good rating?
Due my financial situation, it's impossible for me to stop working for a year and enroll in HKU or CUHK...
That's why e-learning has a lot of advantages for me.
I want an LLM as an "back-up plan". If i have an additional degree, i can have more choices in my career path.
During economic crisis times, it's not easy to change careers and if u only have one degree, just like me, it's gonna be real hard.

Hi, how to you like the OUKH program? I was thinking about enrolling.. I am a U.S. lawyer with U.S. degrees and wanted to supplement my education to possibly expand into the Chinese market. I would appreciate your thoughts on this program. Is it very difficult? How is the online learning environment? Is it flexible? How much time is it consuming? Thanks!

Thanks, Joeylee. I've been having hard time getting anyone from the university to answer my phone calls and emails. Have you had the same experience, or was enrollment pretty smooth?

I enrolled online and i never really had to mail them.
Their website is kind of slow, i hope the elearning mode is a little bit faster. Almost all their information is already online, what do u need still need to know about their programme?

Joeylee, thanks for your responses! If all the information is online, does that include the textbooks or handouts, etc.? For example, do these all come in .pdf format so it's easy to print out and review? Or do you do all your reading and reviewing online? Also, what time are the lectures? I am in the U.S., so would need to be able to watch the lectures in the evening. Is there flexibility that way or do you have to watch live lectures? When do classes start?
Also, have your concerns about the reputation of the school been alleviated? Do you feel like this is a good program that will be viewed favorably by Chinese and or foreign firms and companies?
I guess I was just hoping that someone from the university would pick up the phone or call me and/or email me before I just dropped 10,000 U.S. Dollars for the online masters program! :)
Thanks for your help in answering these questions.. maybe we'll online schoolmates!

I got my LLM/CBL from OUHK in 2011 & it was a great learning experience for me. I got my JD from an ABA school and working as an in-house counsel for a global technology group over a decade. OUHK LLM is designed as a practice-oriented/learner friendly 100% on-line program which will provide you with all the knowledge about today PRC business laws. It's not HKU or CUHK but you get what you paid for & I am happy with what I learned from this program.

Hi,
I live in France, I'm currently in house counsel for an industrial group. I'm very interested by this distance-learning LLM since I can't quit my job for financial reasons.
I would love to have a back up on your experiences with this program. Are the proposed courses interesting? Is their elearning mode efficient? What about the concerns about the reputation of the school?
Many thanks for your answers!

Like I said OUHK is not Harvard/Ofxord yet it's a legitimate school which partially funded by the H.K. government. You need to complete 8 courses for the LLM (take 2 courses each term & done within 2 years). Course materials are interesting and with most current issues. All faculty members are Ph.D holders (mostly U.K.) with years experience in PRC business laws. The program is very flexible and you can arrange/allocate your own study schedule (the only "requirements" are 2 written assignmentsas & a final exam).

It's an interesting program that deserves good credit for its flexibility and the comprehensiveness of the material. The courses are interesting and provide good coverage of Chinese Business Law. OUHK may not be Harvard / Oxbridge or HKU but personally I already had several masters from Top schools so the paper was not what I was after. It's an excellent online distance program which I learnt a lot from. It's quite intensive so if you have a heavy workload be prepared to put in long hours after work and on weekends to finish it within 2 years.
