Hi. I am a student of law from an India and am interested in pursuing my LLM is Australia. However, I'm not sure how the job market for lawyers is in Australia.
Q.1 What are the employment prospects for International students?
Q.2 Do International students manage to find jobs once they graduate?
Q.3 I am one such student not interested in practice, and hence I most definitely wont be registering at the bar. Will this prejudice my being placed with law firms?
Q.4 I am more inclined towards working in a company as a corporate lawyer/legal manager. Do companies actively recruit from universities?
Q.5 I was told that the job market for lawyers is the strongest in Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane. Is this true?
Waiting for a reply!
God bless!

Hi.
I am an Australian about to graduate from Law in Australia and also with an accounting degree.
My experience has been that there is not a lot of work full stop in Australia. That is not to say that there is none, but to get a good job you need good grades, the school you went to is not so important.
Nevertheless you will need to keep in mind that you will be up against Australian Law graduates.. so I would imagine that you would need exceptional grades in order to gain decent employment, as there will be a preference for Australian Degrees.
Furthermore, many graduate jobs are given to students who have completed clerkships at firms during their studies.
While you may not be interested in practice here, to get a job in law you will almost certainly need to be admitted to practice. We have no bar exam here, instead graduates are required to undertake a diploma in legal practice. This is run through the College of Law. You would need to inquire with them as to whether you are able to take this course.
And yes, the job market is the strongest in those cities, this is merely because they are the largest, and therefore require more lawyers.
I am not sure about working for a company. It is not what I am interested in, nevertheless, I do not know anyone who I have gone to law school with who has gained employment of this nature. I think you would need to have some experience within a law firm first.. however this is just my opinion. I could be very wrong.
hope this helps
