Has any HKU applicant received offer of admission from the university? I was rather late in applying (submitted my application during the extended deadline) and I am curous whether applicants who applied before the extended deadline have been notified by HKU. Does anyone know if HKU considers applications on a rolling basis or all in one go after the deadline?

Hi! I am currently studying and have almost finished LLM in HKU.

What program have you applied?

According to my knowledge, usually rolling basis is adopted for the foreign applicant, since HKU want to notify the foreign applicant as early as possible, so that foreign applicants can have more time to prepare (new environment).

But it doesn't mean that late application from foreign applicant will not be considered. In fact the quota is rather flexible. The deadline for application has been extended for several times, which imply there are still many quota left.

Thanks for sharing Thomas. I actually applied for 2 programs with LLM in Corporate & Financial Law as my 1st choice and LLM (general stream) as my 2nd choice. By my reckoning it must have been two weeks since I submitted my applications but I haven't heard a word from HKU till today. I'm getting very anxious already given that HKU is the only uni i applied to. This effectively means that I have no alternative program to fall back to in the event I am rejected by HKU. That aside, since you are at the tail-end of your LLM at HKU, what are your thoughts on the HKU LLM program? Is it worthwhile? Does holding HKU LLM open more opportunities to one who considers working in asia?

The program I am engaging is also LLM(CFL). I have just finished and submitted the dissertation to my supervisor.

I know that the deadline for application for HKU LLM was extended to 31st May 2007. Such deadline had been extended for several times.

I guess the Faculty of Law would consider all applications in one lot after 31st May.

I think the program is worthwhile if you want to learn the PRC commercial and investment laws in the language of English.

Although I know currently there are other programs teaching PRC laws in English : eg. CityU, CU, or even Peking U.

But the most experienced professors of CityU in this area had left CityU and joined the HKU and CU respectively.

School of Law of PekingU has just opened up LLM program in English, but I don't think you can expect from it too much, there is no doubt the professors of PekingU are more familiar with PRC law, but they are not critical. I dare to make such statement is because ten years ago I completed the studying of part-time LLB program of PekingU.

Regarding opportunities of working in Asia, I think the LLM awarded by HKU or CU would be helpful, but after all, it depends on the professional/academic qualification, and working experience of the person in question.

By the way, regarding the alternative program to fall back, I suggest you also make an application to LLM of Chinese University of HK (CU), in case your application to HKU is refused. I know the deadline for LLM in CU is 13 or 14 th of June (you may check this from its website), and the application may be proceed via online.

Many thanks again for your prompt and yet insightful response. It's good to know that HKU's LLM is highly regarded by a current student. I always believe that views from current and past students are the most accurate and honest reflection of the quality of the university.
By the way, I'm ethnic chinese (i can read, speak and write chinese) and I consider my command of the chinese language as fairly competent. So, apart from learning PRC law, I also hope to hone my spoken and written English at HKU. From your experience, do you think HKU provides a condusive environment for students to improve their standard of English language?
Regarding your suggestion of applying to CUHK, I may consider giving it a shot.

It is good to know that both of us are Chinese!

I think one year period for improving English may be too short, especially given the fact that within same period you are simultaneously taking the course of LLM.

But there are some English improvement course provided by English Center of HKU, which may be helpful for your purpose.

What program are you applying for HKU LLM

I applied to:
Business and Corporate LLM (haven't heard from)
Intellectual Property (have heard from)

So now I'm just deciding between CUHK, HKU and work. Would prefer to be in Hong Kong, but it's hard to turn down money in for essentially a very expensive year long vacation. The ideal would be going to Hong Kong with the promise of a job after a year, but I doubt that anyone can make that promise to me.

thanks for your info. Truth is, I just sat for my IELTS today and I was told that results will only be released in two weeks time. So, i'm doubtful whether HKU will offer me a place without fulfiling the english requirement first. Anyway, if I don't hear from them by the end of June, I will probably write to enquire about my status.
Although the general consensus is that HK legal field is very lucrative, I am personally leaning more towards working in Singapore. The perception I have about HK is that it is just too intense and fast paced. In this aspect I think Singapore is better in that you can still look forward to life after work. That said, it's purely my personal opinion about life in HK and I may be wrong.

I have submitted my application to the LLM program in Chinese Law online on May 12, 2007 (and received an acknowledgement thereof) but I sent the reference letters and the IELTS results following the deadline of May 31, 2007.

Since, as of the date I have not received any feedback relating to my admission yet, do you think I should worry my application has been denied ?!

Does anyone of you received any confirmation of his/her admission?!

You will note from my 1st post that I was also late in applying - though not after the deadline. I got my offer of admission two weeks ago but that was not before some persistent bugging from me. Regrettably, the offer of admission was an informal one, ie. in the form on a casual email notification and until today, i hav not received the official letter of offder from HKU. Till it reaches me, i'll have to assume that no offer has been made.
My advice to you is to either ring them up or write to them because from my experience, HKU people are not as efficient as Hongkies should be or of what we have come to expect of them!!

I've sent several e-mail messages to both the faculty and Professors Sherrin and Jackson, in order to receive a feedback, but I had no reply at all. I also called the faculty, but the girl who answered me told me in a poor English to call them back next Monday (don't ask me why!).

When should you start the program?! Septemeber?! I would start in January but in any case I really need to know it quite in advance, and I find pretty weird that after more than 2 months from the submission of the application they did not provide me with any news..

Anyway, as soon as I succeed in talking with someone next week I'll let you know.

thank you for replying! I'm starting in september, so i really really need to know if in one month i'm in hong kong or at home. I called them last friday and i was told (in poor english as you said ;) ) that they'll tell me by the beginning of the month of august. in june they told me that i'll know by mid july. They don't seem to be conscious of the fact that oversea students maybe want to know a bit earlier. But you still have plenty of time. I'm wondering if there are many other students in the same situation...too bad, really.

I called them each day of this week (at the number +852 28592953), and each time they told me to call the day after..at this point I don't really know what to do.

Does anyone of you have any good news or idea of when the (potential) admission will be communicated ?!

Just wondering if someone has heard from the univ about the univ decision. After getting really impatient- i enquired with Dr Doughlas Arner, who happens to be the HOD for Corp & Financial Law- he has informed me that i am through and will be getting an offer letter some time end of May !
