Grüezi and welcome

By stephan in Gandhi & Me - LLM at UCL 2008-2009 on Jan 20, 2009

Grüezi*, dear readers. First of all - and before introducing myself - I have to apologise for the rather daft name of this blog. Apparently studying has deprived me of any form of creativity. "Gandhi & Me" was the first half-original name I could think of. It might, however, be quite an appropriate blog name. Not that I would strive to become an even remotely famous or revered person. No, no, no. I am pretty satisfied with my humble existence. Yet, professors and deans certainly hope that a considerable amount of their students will become alumni they are proud to impress current and potential students with. I won't forget the introductory courses at UCL when several speakers called us the future elite. Ahem. Me? Thank you. But quite an overstatement of my deeds and abilities - and as some might argue of that of the UCL as well.

But I'm deviating. Introduction was the supposed topic. So here we go. My name is Stephan. I am a Swiss lawyer with a few years of legal experience back in Switzerland. Since last September I've been studying at the University College of London (UCL). After completion of the LLM I hope to work for a few more years in London before returning to Switzerland. More information about me? I'm sure you will learn more about me if you dutifully read all my blog entries.

I've wanted to blog about my experiences since the start of my courses, but for several reasons (to be disclosed at a later point) I never got around to do it. Until now. So, once again: Grüezi and welcome.

* Grüezi: Swiss German for hello.

"Dennis, thanks for the menace."
Oh, snap!

Dennis, thanks for the menace. Time will manifest what the Holy One has ordained.
Stephan bro, spit it out and get this thing going.

I thank Him for His glories.

Stephan, you need to make hay while the sun shines. No dribs and drabs, just put it out and bring the blog alive. I'm counting on you to know London - nice one, mate.

Cheers, HE is the joy of man, Praise Him, Praise Him.

@Christ-Choice
Your kind supporting words are appreciated. I thank Him for your wisdom to judge my blog on the first and only one entry.

Stephan, welcome. Your blog is very boring, if you compare it to what others have done in the past. Tony at Yale was great, then again maybe that's why he was at Yale. Through the Hole One I shall continue from where he left off later this year.

Now try and put more life into this thing. Jazz it up, friend. Come on, we're waiting.

Finally, make sure you read my blog from New Haven (or Cambridge) later this year.

I thank Him for our wisdom.

Living in London is ok for me, since I have the luxury of living with my English girlfriend who is working. London is an exciting, but also an expensive place (even with the weak pound). But student accommodation, discounts, free museums etc. enable a decent and reasonably priced life standard.
Our career officers are definitely close to the City's law firms. Be aware that application deadlines for traineeships (to become a solicitor) are ridiculously early. And other ways to get a job in a law firm directly after the LLM are scarce. American degrees might be convertible, check http://www.sra.org.uk/ for more information.

awesome. thanks for starting this blog, bro. i'm thinking of the UCL program, too, but it's kind of a drag that the intercollegiate program is no-more.

anyway, how do you like living in London? I heard that most students live a pretty humble existence there because it's so expensive. also, do you think that going to UCL (or any other London LLM) is a good way to get into a City firm? I'm from California, by the way, so I am also curious if the universities/career offices in London are close to firms there (i.e. can help me get a job there if I'm good).

keep it up!

peace,
dennis
