The University

Birmingham City University is combining world-leading new knowledge with pioneering teaching methods to create a dynamic learning environment.

A recent national audit of research excellence – the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) - has led to Birmingham City University being placed in a ‘supergroup’ of rising star modern universities spearheading research excellence to the very highest quality.

This excellence is shared among students because it directly informs pioneering teaching, often delivered in state-of-the-art facilities or through hi-tech virtual learning environments.

The University is regularly praised for innovation across its broad portfolio of courses, from being awarded Skillset Media Academy status for its media provision to being one of only 10 UK universities to have Grade 1 Ofsted rating for both primary and secondary teacher training.

Birmingham City University offers a learning experience that is very much practice-based to give graduating students the edge in a future career – for example, Law students do ‘pro bono’ (voluntary) work on Death Row cases and broadcast students create their own radio show.

This success in teaching and research underpins Birmingham City University’s renewed mission to be a powerful force for learning, creativity and enterprise.

To help deliver this mission there has recently been major expansion of facilities, for example the creation of the Seacole Building at the University’s modern Edgbaston campus, a new facility which is part of the Faculty of Health and houses state-of-the-art learning equipment such as ‘virtual’ hospital wards, realistic simulation dummies and a mock operating theatre.

While £7million sport facilities - comprising a sports hall and 80-station fitness suite - at the City North Campus in Perry Barr is due to open this September, with a further £150million to be invested to create a major city centre campus in the Eastside district.

This combination of academic quality and on-going investment in facilities offers an exciting student experience.

The Law School

The University is a major centre for legal education and training and has a long history (over 30 years) of providing high quality law courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level relevant to the needs of the legal profession, and to a wide range of related careers. Our law courses are designed with a strong emphasis on practice-based learning and skills development enabling our students to relate theory and knowledge to the real world of legal practice. We were the first Law School to offer undergraduate and postgraduate students the opportunity for study placements with death penalty appeal advocates in the USA.

Our emphasis on studying law in practice is supported by the excellent teaching facilities within the School, in particular our two replica courtrooms equipped with audio-visual facilities allowing students the experience of appearing in a real life scenario as a lawyer. We also offer an active student-led Law Society and highly respected and very successful Mooting Society which over the last several years has consistently reached the finals of national mooting competitions.
