The University

Nestling between the mountains of the Boland, in the heart of the winelands, lies the picturesque university town of Stellenbosch. Stellenbosch University traces its origin back to the opening of the Stellenbosch Gymnasium in 1866. The Gymnasium subsequently gave birth to the “Arts Department” which became “Stellenbosch College” in 1881. By April 1918 it had managed to convince the Government of the need for the institution, and Victoria College then became the Stellenbosch University.

At the centre of Stellenbosch, at the corner of Victoria Street and Ryneveld Street, is the Old Main Building, home to the Stellenbosch Faculty of Law. Inaugurated in 1886 as the main building of the Victoria College, this building also serves as a monument to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the town by Simon van der Stel in 1686.

Stellenbosch University is regarded as one of the leading research and tertiary education institutions in Southern Africa.

The Faculty

The Stellenbosch Law Faculty itself was established in 1921. The relatively small and intimate Faculty is regarded as a very prestigious Law School in Southern Africa - only 250 first year students are selected for each academic year at undergraduate level. In total the Faculty consists of no more than 1300 students in a particular academic year. The Faculty furthermore boasts with numerous successful and high profile alumni, as well as highly respected academic staff members who are regarded as international experts in their respective areas of research and interest.

Entry Requirements

An undergraduate degree in law or foreign equivalent at an appropriate level (average of 60% is required) is sufficient for entry. The Faculty will consider each application on merit.

Location

The very appropriate slogan of the South African Tourism Board is “See the World in One Country”, and as soon as you start discovering the different aspects of South Africa, you will realise why this is indeed very true.

The historic town of Stellenbosch is situated close to Cape Town and is surrounded by the magnificent mountain scenery of the Jonkershoek Valley. Stellenbosch was founded in 1679, but is not only a place with dignified historic buildings and tree-lined avenues. It is a modern town, a bustling centre for commerce, agriculture and education of which the University campus is an integral part. The town has moved with the times, but has succeeded in maintaining its rural character and preserving its historic heritage.

Stellenbosch offers a wide range of activities for visitors. It is situated 30 km from beautiful beaches and 50 km from Cape Town. The active nature lover can enjoy the hiking trails in the surrounding mountain ranges or wander through the nature reserve in town. There are a wide variety of cultural activities in which the University’s departments of Music, Drama and Fine Arts play an important role. Furthermore, the Stellenbosch wine region is one of the oldest in the southern hemisphere and it is very highly regarded.

Student Life

In addition to the numerous and diverse activities available for students in this university town and also the surrounding area, international students are also encouraged to get involved in the community and university activities through participation in the International Students Organisation of Stellenbosch (ISOS). ISOS is a non-political organisation that aims to bring together all international students and to share cultural insights. Throughout the semester, ISOS organises excursions and various social activities aimed at learning more about South Africa, its people and its culture. ISOS runs a community service project in the nearby township of Kayamandi and other school in the area and welcomes your participation. The International Office provides an office space to ISOS and a student assistant coordinates the activities and acts as ISOS President. Elections for the ISOS executive committee are held at the beginning of each semester to ensure input and participation from the wider international and local student community.
