The University

Practice-oriented education and an integrative view have been the hallmarks of the University of St.Gallen ever since it was founded.Today, the HSG educates some 5,000 students in business administration, economics, law and social sciences – with success: the HSG is among Europe’s leading business universities. Its holistic education, which meets the highest academic standards, has earned it the seal of approval of the EQUIS and AACSB accreditations.

The Law School

For over a decade, the Executive M.B.L.-HSG has been a standout feature of both the executive education program at the University of St.Gallen and the executive legal education landscape in Europe. We put our extensive experience to work in designing a course of the highest quality. In particular, our presence on three continents is a unique element of the course and as critical to the success of our objectives as the personal mentoring and support of our students.
Graduates of the course are much sought-after in the legal, business, consulting, administrative professions and politics. Holders of the ‹Executive Master of European and International Business Law M.B.L.-HSG› benefit from the reputation that HSG graduates enjoy in the marketplace.

The Program

Teaching and learning in context
To find the right answers to business law questions, you need to consider them in context. Executives in particular must be able to grasp the big picture. Accordingly, we do not take an academic, disciplined-based approach to issues. Rather, we focus on practical solutions to real problems. Together, students, and instructors tackle questions of business law taking into account the relevant legal, economic, historical, social, and cultural aspects.
Our presence on the three economically most important continents is a unique feature that ensures the inclusion of European, American, and Asian perspectives in the course content. Our bilingual (English/German) approach further reflects the international working environment. Where necessary, our program includes in-depth contextual studies (Kontextstudium). This enables us to reinforce the integrated approach.

Intramural studies: The coaching system
The core topics of business law are taught to our students in nine one-week modules. Learning takes place through discussion with our international experts and among the students themselves. Our coaching concept ensures the closest possible attention in these intensive phases of learning and understanding. The coaches are your constant contacts throughout the module. Together with us, they ensure the timeliness and practical relevance
of the content. Case studies and other individual and teamwork are an essential part of the modules. Here, too, we ensure that our students can directly apply their new knowledge in their everyday work. Each week ends with a test. The form of the test alternates between oral and written, as well as individual and group exams. Negotiating skills and strategies are essential not just for lawyers but for every executive. For this reason, experts at Harvard Law School are our partners. In the fee-based module ‹Negotiation› you’ll acquire skills in analyzing, preparing, and conducting negotiations based on the Harvard concept of ‹Getting to Yes.›

Extramural studies: preparing for the modules
Students prepare for the modules using a multimedia, password-protected teaching and learning platform. This guarantees that they can complete essential parts of their training independent of time and place. For self-study, all relevant documentation is supplied in advance. We provide mentoring and monitor students’ progress as they work through the content. Before starting a new module, students complete a writing assignment in the form of a brief, a summary, a case solution, or a critique of the literature, a decision, or a judgement.

St.Gallen International Competition Law Forum ICF und CILP
Learning in context also means listening to leading scholars and practitioners discuss important current issues in European and international business law. Consequently, we have integrated this aspect into the course. Our students participate at no charge in the
‹Convention on International Law and Politics CILP› and the ‹St.Gallen International Competition Law Forum ICF›, both first-class international events in their field.

Diploma thesis
For their diploma thesis, students analyze a current problem of European or international business law. Topics are proposed by the faculty, or students can choose a specific problem at their company. The work is supervised by a member of the faculty. The thesis
demonstrates that students have sufficient knowledge of European and international business law and are able to develop independent, soundly based comprehensive solutions to practical problems. Each year, the ten best papers are published by the director of the program in cooperation with a respected publishing house.

Your effort. Your success
Once you have passed six of the nine modules, completed the entire course, and your thesis has been accepted, you are awarded the title ‹Executive Master of European and International Business Law M.B.L.-HSG›. Not only does this degree enjoy an international reputation. It also opens the door to the unique alumni networks of the Executive M.B.L.-HSG and the University of St.Gallen.

European Law Reporter ELR
Last but not least, for the duration of the course our students will enjoy a complimentary subscription to the monthly international journal ‹European Law Reporter ELR› delivered to their home.

The Faculty

For over a decade, our ‹Global Faculty› has been bringing together leading experts from around the world. At top-tier universities and other centers of excellence, specialists from three continents will share their knowledge and experience with you. Among them are representatives of business, the bar, and academia, judges of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) and the EFTA Court, members and staff of the European Commission, the
