I'm interested in going, but want to learn more about it from people who have participated in it...Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Are most of the professors from Latin America or Germany? Is there much emphasis on international arbitration/litigation? How do you enjoy living in Santiago, are you living in an apartment or the university? What is the average age of the students? Many questions I know. Thanks so much for your information!

The professors are mainly Latin American but all of them are really good, in their field. Some of them Work in ICC - ICSID (In some Tribunals) - and in their countries in the FTA and BIT negotiations. The emphasis is in arbitration, not litigation and in FTA and BIT´s. About Santiago de Chile, well is a nice city,full of foreigners and the atmosphere is nice, (I am form Colombia so it is very quiet for me) I found a place near the U, a flat that I share with a friend of The LLM (from Mexico) But I heard the U. is going to have apartaments for the student in teh next years, (you must ask, im not sure) About the age. I am the youngest with 24 years, and the oldest is 45 (I guess) the average is 28 maybe.

In this moment we are 5 foreigners (2 Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Mexico) and the others are from Chile. From germany none. During the day I am not working but I think it is possible

Sobre el programa te puedo contar que te otorga una vision integral del Derecho Internacional con un enfasis en materia de inversiones y arbitraje. El programa se divide en tres trimestres el primero en derecho internacional publico que es el fundamento para entender y comprender el derecho internacional, el segundo sobre comercio internacional OMC y TLC, y el final sobre inversiones y arbitraje. El sistema es muy interesante ya que combinas clases en Ingles y español con profesores de primer nivel en America Latina y en Europa puesto que contaras con profesores de la Universidad de Heidelberg y del Intituto Max Plank. Mi experiencia en el LLM ha sido muy buena ya que he logrado profundizar mis conocimientos en la materia y obtener nuevos areas de interes para mi vida profesional y academica. El proceso de seleccion es doble, existe un primer filtro que se hace en Chile y donde obviamente se analiza tus notas estudios, cv etc. Despues de esta seleccion los que quedan son enviados a Alemania para que la Universidad haga una segunda seleccion final. Obviamente ellos tienen definido un perfil del tipo de estudiante en el que estan interesados como cualquier universidad. Cualquier inquietud adicional no dudes en escribir

It’s unacceptable!!!! Just Kidding!! Como recomendación de primera mano, les sugiero consideren cursar su LL.M. en la University of British Columbia en Vancouver! Vengo aterrizando después de un formidable fin de semana en esa área y el lugar es increíble! El campus de la universidad y en especial la facultad de derecho no es nada de otro mundo, sin embargo la zona en la que se ubican es formidable. Personalmente pienso desistirme del proyecto de cursar el master en los Estados Unidos y optar por Vancouver, quede impresionado por la gentileza y apertura de la gente que ahí habita, la diversidad cultural, actividad económica, civilidad, escenarios naturales, etc, etc, etc. Ademas, la Universidad goza de muy buena reputacion, es el paquete completo. Naturalmente que hay otros paìses que tienen excelentes programas de Master, pero el de la Universidad de Heidelberg y de la Universidad de Chile es ùnico en su gènero. Te ofrece la posibilidad de obtener dos tìtulos, de dos Universidades de gran prestigio, en un año y ademàs puedes practicar el inglès si eres hispanohablante y el español, en el caso de los compañeros que vienen de paìses como Alemania, Francia, Tailandia, entre otros. Fuera de esto, vivir en Santiago es bastante màs barato que en cualquier paìs del Norte, sin contar con el clima que es fantàstico y el ambiente es chèvere. En cuanto a lo acadèmico, los profesores son de primer nivel y el programa està muy bien diseñado, porque abarca todas las àreas del Derecho que tienen relevancia hoy en dìa, pero que, lamentablemente, no son muy conocidas. Bueno, y por si fuera poco, el precio no tiene comparaciòn con ningùn programa de Master en otro lugar. Si tienen cualquier pregunta, no duden en hacèrmela llegar. Recomiendo este Master. Slds

Hola a todos estoy demasiado interesado en el Master en derecho internacional ofrecido por la universidad de Heidelberg y la Universidad de Chile; pero considero tambien interesante la Maestria en Derecho de la Integracion Economica ofrecida por la Universidad del Salvador en Buenos Aires y la Universidad de Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne, que lamentablemente no se encuentra en esta pagina de internet. Se del buen nivel de las Universidades de Heidelberg y Paris1; respeto a la Univesidad de Chile que es punta de lanza en el aspecto academico a nivel latinoamerica junto con la USP la UNAM y la UBA, pero desconozco los costos, el prestigio y el nivel academico de la Universidad del Salvador en Buenos Aires. Tengo en muy buen concepto a las Univ. Argentinas como la UBA la Univ. Austral, la Univ. di Tella, y la Catolica Argentina, no creo que la Univ. del Salvador sea la excepcion y agradezco de antemano la informacion proporcionada.

Tengo unas “pequeñas” preguntas para los que participaron del programa (por supuesto, si tienen tiempo para contestarlas): Leí el contenido del programa y, evidentemente, se enfoca en el tema de acuerdos sobre inversiones y arbitraje internacional. Sin embargo, me parece que tiene un acercamiento muy teórico, o sea, con más énfasis en el estudio “filosófico-jurídico” del derecho y el arbitraje internacional (ej.: “The changing role of subjects of international law: issues relating to State sovereignty and the role of individuals and international organizations”; “Diplomatic Protection and its evolution in the light of new needs of international investments”), dejando de lado los aspectos prácticos que puedan ayudarte como miembro de un despacho de abogados. Mis preguntas son: 1. ¿estoy equivocado? ¿el contenido del programa me ayudará en el desempeño de la vida profesional como practicante?; 2. ¿está más dirigido a quienes se dedican al campo académico?; 3. si son abogados que trabajan en despachos legales ¿qué conocimientos da el programa que puedan ponerte en ventaja frente a otros abogados? Sé que son muchas preguntas pero les pido por favor que me echen una mano respondiendo aunque sea a alguna de ellas; necesito saber si el programa ofrecerme lo que busco. Gracias. NancyF Joined: 10 Aug 2009 Posts: 4	Question about Heidelberg center Tue Aug 11, 2009 05:05 PM Hola a todos, Soy Mexicana, hice el LLM en Derecho Internacional con especialidad en Inversiones, Comercio y Arbitraje en el Heidelberg Center en Santiago en el 2008, me titule hace 3 meses en Heidelberg. Mi experiencia en el master para intentar contestar todas sus dudas, q seguramente son las mismas que yo tenia antes de animarme es la siguiente. La maestria es mitad espaniol y mitad ingles, pero las pruebas que son por lo general mensuales son casi siempre en ingles. El enfoque de la maestria es al cien por ciento internacional y bien practico, la mayoria de los profesores ejercen la profesion en el area en diversos organismos como por ejemplo la WTO, el CAM santiago, despachos privados, son del mas alto nivel. El anio pasado eramos 25 estudiantes de thailandia, USA, brasil, mexico, honduras, el salvador, venezuela, colombia, chile, panama, ecuador, peru. toda america latina. Tambien hay clases de aleman 2 veces por semana y una vez por semana de derecho aleman, estos cursos son sin ningun costo extra. La convivecia entre profesores y alumnos es muy agradable y entre los estudiantes ni se diga, se logra una red impresionante. La verdad es que mi experiencia despues del master es que si me abrio puertas y me ayudo a especializarme en una de las areas mas cotizadas del derecho como lo es el derecho internacional. Son 8 meses en santiago y marzo en alemania para titularte alla y tomar seminarios en el instituto max planck que es un centro de investigacion impresionante. Tambien existen apoyos por parte del DAAD y de la Universidad. La experiencia de vivir en Santiago para mi fue muy grata pues es una ciudad tranquila y a la vez cosmopolita, hay muchos lugares para vivir y no es caro. la universidad es centrica. Yo la verdad lo recomiendo muchisimo , las dos universidades son de prestigio en el mundo y de las mas reconocidas, tambien si ustedes tienen dudas las personas encargadas de promover y la cordinadora son excelentes y les resolveran todas sus dudas si las contactan directamente. NancyF Joined: 10 Aug 2009 Posts: 4	Question about Heidelberg center Tue Aug 11, 2009 05:12 PM Los costos van desde 300 usd hasta 500 usd ( yo pagaba como 500 por un estudio bastante bien equipado, nuevo y de lujo), el transporte es barato.. si puedes conseguir pasantias e incluso trrabajo, solo es cuestion de buscarle pero si hay opciones, aparte el horario del master te lo permite por que es en las tardes de 6 a 9 aprox.

So maybe the person that say that the LLM is a joke is not that good student to take benefit of the opportunities. In my case I did learn, and Im doing very well in the internatinal law labor circle. Lear is an option, not a duty.

Do you know what level of spanish a student should have to (1) be admitted, and (2) understand and do well in the program? also, does anyone know which spanish profeciency tests are accepted or are good? I dont know about the test, but you can contact Andrea Lucas. About the students there is different all the years, in my period we were 23 and from all latin america asi from USA and Thailand. The classes for me were intersting and usefull, it was not anly theor but real cases to solve. Regards !
