Dear all

I'm a little bit confused as everybody is talking about the deadline fo 20 November 2009 for the MJur-course taking place 2010/11.

If you have a look at Appendix 2 (www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/apply…) it says that deadline is 22 January 2009 and that you need to support materials B (i.e. including one piece of written work).

So whats right now? Can anyone tell me when the deadline is and if one has to send in a piece of written work in too or not?

Becoz they're talking about Cambridge LLM. Not Oxford BCL. The later doesn't seem to have LLM program.

Well, Oxford does have an LL.M. programme, it's just called MJur / BCL.

Yeap.. Deadline should be 22 January 2010 for MJur and BCL in Oxford. I should think so. I have one referee who has gone for a year-end vacation and wont be back till end of December 2009. If the deadline is earlier, can anyone please reconfirm coz then i would need to find another referee. Thx

Is there anyone applying to MSc in Law and Finance in Oxford? Do you have any tips for the piece of written work?

I want to apply now at oxford for LLM or masters. Is deadline for any course still not over. What could be the other law schools in UK or Singapore where the deadlines are not oevr. Please let me know

I reckon the deadline for Oxford’s programmes ended on the 22nd January, 2010. I’m not sure whether Cambridge is still accepting applications. You ought to try UCL, KCL, QM and LSE... I’m pretty sure they're still open for new applicants. In England you might also have a shot at Nottingham, Manchester, Bristol or Birmingham. In Scotland, you should try Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow. I think all these universities are accepting applications for September 2010. Sorry but I know nothing about universities in Singapore.

If not oxford and cambridge, which other COLLEGES in UK come in tier 1 from the ones you have mentioned. I am intereted only in the best ones.

Oxford and Cambridge are the most traditional universities in the UK and in the world for that matter (along with Harvard and Yale). But UCL, KCL and LSE are the best colleges inside the University of London which is just as good as Oxford and Cambridge, but not as traditional as the other two for one simple reason: age. Oxford and Cambridge are more than 800 years old whilst University of London was founded in the early 1800s. But you can apply to UCL, KCL and LSE without any resentment towards reputation. In the last Times Higher Education ranking UCL placed 4th in the world and KCL 25th. LSE was a little far behind but only because it’s specialised in economy and other social sciences… and in such field it’s definitely one of the best in the world (maybe even better than UCL and KCL). Cardiff is a good university but its law school doesn’t enjoy a great reputation in the UK… it’s good, but definitely not first tier… more like a lower second tier (unless you’d like to specialise in Canon Law… I think they’re the only ones to offer such specialisation). Long story short, I’d apply to UCL, KCL and LSE if I too was seeking only first tier universities. If you’d like to broaden your choices just a little, try also Nottingham Manchester and Edinburgh which are definitely among the best law school on the second tier. If you still think these aren’t enough, apply to Aberdeen, Bristol, Birmingham and Glasgow… then I’d apply to Queen’s Belfast and Cardiff… as a last resort.

HI AGAIN
if i apply now at KCL, UCL, and other top tier universities, what are my chances of making through? Do the admissions happen on a first come forst served basis?Also, s toefl or ielts mandatory for these universities ? I have had my entire education in english. Is there a carry forward system in these univ. If u don make it one year do they keep ur appli prnding for the next year ?

Hi. LSE applies the first-come first-served policy and therefore early applicants have a better shot. I think the same applies to KCL and UCL (though I’m not sure about UCL). Command of the English language is mandatory, of course, and the universities ask for proof of such command through minimum grades on the IELTS or TOEFL. I don’t know the TOEFL equivalents, but I know LSE asks for a 7.5 IELTS (with no less than 7.0 in any section), UCL requires a 7.5 (with no less than 6.5 in any section) and KCL requires a 7.0 (with no less than 7.0 in any section). They do say though that they might waive the IELTS or TOEFL where the applicant’s had education in English. If that’s your case then you’ll need to provide them with evidence of such fact. And they don’t keep unsuccessful applications for the next year. If you don’t make it in this year then you’ll need to apply again for 2011/2012. You’d better run to get everything ready in time for this year ‘cause even though they might be accepting applications I reckon it won’t be for long…

hi beicon . do these colls ( KCL, UCL , LSE)shortlist only on first come first served basis. i am already very late for applying. What would be my chances of making through if i apply so late ? I have an excellent academic record.

Can i take IELTS after applying to these colleges. Do the uni's accept appli's without IETLS score and then later on send you an offer letter on the condition that you get a minimum IELTS score. Does taking IELTS give you an edge over an application without an IELTS score as far as selection is concerned?

Hi ab123. If you've got an excellent academic record I think I stand a chance, even though you're applying late. As regards IELTS, you can apply first and send the IELTS score later. As far as selection goes, I don't see presenting the IELTS score later as a setback, especially the universities already state that they're able to make conditional offers and if you just can't meet the conditions they'll end up calling someone. Anyway, considering you say you've got a great academic record, the lack of IELTS results at application should not impair your application and the chances of getting in.
