Dundee vs Aberdeen
Dear all:Tue May 05, 2009 02:38 PM I was admitted to both schools for oil and gas LLM programs. I know that generally Aberdeen has ranking higher than Dundee as a Law school in general, but which LLM in Oil is stronger? As I heard Dundees CEPMLP is very known in that industry What would you advise? |

I personally like Aberdeen better... mostly because it is near the oil and gas companies and because it is a much more reputable law school than Dundee (in general aspects). Nevertheless, Dundee's programme has a wider (not necessarily better) approach. It has some modules (such as mining law) that Aberdeen doesn't. I think that if your focus is oil and gas itself, Aberdeen is a better choice. If you want to study other related issues, such as mining for instance, Dundee may be a better place to be. But keep in mind that most job opportunities may be in Aberdeen...

Hello, Thu May 21, 2009 02:48 PM I work at CEPMLP and I would like to highlight (objectively) the main differences between Dundee's LLM Petroleum Law and Policy and Aberdeen's LLM Oil and Gas Law. Dundee's LLM Petroleum Law and Policy is delivered by CEPMLP, a unit of University of Dundee's Graduate Centre for Natural Resources Law, Policy and Management, which is diifferent from the Dundee University Law School. Aberdeen's LLM is delivered by the Aberdeen Law School. Dundee's LLM is based on a modular system comprising 200credits which covers an induction module, 7-8 core and elective modules and a dissertation. Dundee vs Aberdeen
Hey,Thu May 21, 2009 09:36 PM I am an Aberdeen LLM student, oil and gas concentration. I had the choice btw Ab and DUndee. I can try to explain U the reasons of my choice. First, the LLM oil and gas law is linked to Aberdeen uni which is pretty well ranked and more well known by scholars (I gonna start a PHD soon). In addition, many of big oil and gas companies are based in aberdeen (BP, shell....) Moreover, the university is seen as a reference in engineering questions in oil and gas. (for instance for brent spar disposal, Aberdeen university was required to produce a report on the issue) and that is a good influence on the school of law and we have some professors from the engineering school who give us some lectures on various topics. Secondly, the programme itself. My voluntee was to focus only on oil and gas issues (which are the two hot topics). Thirdly, U have plenty of choices for courses. other reasons: the town itself .....very nice place to live...plenty of students over there! the price too: for european students the dundee LLM £10 000 , in aberdeen 3 400!!!!!!! I agree with other comments. All depend on the area U wanna focus on. Dundee has a strong international reputation in energy, the place to be for water, mining arbitration. Nevertheless, for purely oil and gas law questions I'd say Aberdeen. Last but not least, the director, john Paterson is very available for his students. He wrote a very good book in oil and gas law with greg gordon and other professors from aberdeen uni...I recommand it as a first approach..it is now my bible ;) |
