Hi all,
I've got 2 offers
soas, LLM in International and Comparative Commercial Law
qm, LLM in International Business Law
i dont know which is better
can someone give me some information? thanx

btw, as an overseas student, i think i'll have a rather hard time getting employment in the UK with only an LLM, especially in law firms. But is it possible for me to get a job in other areas, some non-legal areas?

Any input on SOAS? The course selection is impressive and the LLM specializations are vast!!!

The forum is, however, very silent on SOAS

I haven't decided now... But If I go to SOAS, I'll choose the specialist LLM program as yours. And the offer said that we could make our final course selection at enrolment. Unfortunately, I must take the 8 wks pre-sessional course before the program if I choose SOAS.

I vote for QM... but, taking into account that they are both from the University of London, I don't think there much difference.

Well...I faced the same dilemma between KCL, QMUL and SOAS....!
But after loads of debates and discussions I have declined the offers.

Decided for SOAS.

The admin in QM was a huge turnoff and I do think that generally SOAS takes the edge over QM.

Good luck !!!!

yes...the QMUL administration is a big turn off...!
but when I actually visited QMUL I realised that its much different that what I thought when I was back in my country.

I have been cribbing about the QMUL administration for the last 2-3 months...! But I think you were mistaken by the administration...I had actually gone there to see the KCL tour....but took a chance to visit the proffessors at QMUL...and then changed my mind to accept the QMUL offer..!
So I am proud to make the decision...thanks...Cheers...

Well...lets not really talk about the admin of QM....becoz my recent encounter has shown that SOAS is even worst...! An if any SOAS employee is on this forum...he would know what I am talking about..!

I applied to SOAS for LLM.....and 4 weeks later I receive a conditional offer for MA in Commercial and Comparative Law...ridiculous....isn't it..! Also, they asked me to pay some 1000GBP for a pre-sessional course...! Further, they expected me to receive a First Division overall average....My marksheets clearly show that I have recieved a Second Division and there was no way I could boast the average to First Division with a single final year...!

I emailed them asking for a clarification for the whole offer and for the non-sensible offer which they sent me .....honestly they were even worst then QM....>>>>> didn't reply for 6-8 weeks....As if they were not interested in my application at all.

Finally I emailed them telling them that I have made a decision to go ahead with QM....
then I receive an apology from them for not responding to my emails....and then just a few days back they sent in a Unconditional offer for the LLM...

So, If you are considering the administration as the factor to decide...I think QM is much better with its administration...!

Well... maybe yes...

I don't have any reasons to complain..they are very good with me.

I decided to take SOAS on the basis of the comparative view they offer with other legal systems which again not a lot of the schools offer. I am sure it is a good choice and has a great reputation!

Yes....the Comparative view is excellent...! SOAS is specially good if you wish to learn about the Developing Countries and their perspectives...! It is known for these things..!

However, SOAS is more academic oriented! So if you wish to practice as a lawyer (Solicitor or Barrister)..SOAS is not preferred by the City Law firms (atleast the ones I have spoken to!

I chose SOAS mainly because they answered faster to my application than Queen Mary and UCL. :)

And now that I have learned more about SOAS, its seems like a right place for my type of individual, and I can still take one course at Queen Mary if I want.

I think Queen Mary is better, SOAS is too specific.

Wheretogo, you are right in oine thing-they are not comparable. SOAS stands for School of Oriental and African Studies and in the eyes of any decent company the only reason to go to SOAS is to learn about these regions and law and business in these countries. Your judgement will be questioned if you have a different reason. For this reason QM is significantly better, it has a broader appeal. Why would you do a general LLM in a School of Oriental and African Studies if you are not planning to work in the region?

why?

1- for example if I want to teach in the arbitration area - gives an excellent overview of the several emerging market legal systems and how arbitration is conducted there;

2- related to the energy industry ( in which I am interested) - how are disputes arbitrated in those regions and emerging markets?

2- gives you a comparative view;

3- gives you a comprehensive UK experience as well with the general modules that are offered;

4- part of the University of London - good school;

5-QM - also good but not different - teaching will be similar to say Kings, UCL as all offer the same sort of modules;

For all this I think it is worth it and very much...

I don't understand. who has told you or given you an impression that QMUL is not better than SOAS in the emerging market legal systems (and for that matter even Arbitration or any other specific subject you have mentioned above.)

Further, most of the top line Universities provide for comparative view alongwith the UK experience in all general modules. That is how it is for most of the Universities in London.

And if you haven't realised even QMUL is a part of University of London....SOAS is not the only one...so that point does not count.

And the city law firms and Corporate law firms in london have preffered QMUL over SOAS since quiet sometime...! So I think you are mistaken with the reputation of SOAS in the legal market over here.

And not to mention SOAS will be sending many students for their modules to QMUL lectures...So a few modules of SOAS have since last 2-3 years been taught by QMUL...!

I am not questioning the quality of either.

I simply prefer SOAS nothing more. I believe your points are all correct.

Its a matter of preference nothing else...!!!

The reputation of both is good. I don't believe it is bad at all! on the contrary.!!!

Times and Guardian both place QMUL as no.9 in rankings for 2010. So QMUL has finally broken into the top 10.
